Terrible place to work

Pros

Free food occasionally and holiday party

Cons

Aldevron is the kind of place that people right out of college come to work for and don’t know any better about how to be properly treated at a job. Management does not know how to solve problems or implement beneficial change, everyone is extremely catty to one another, and communication across teams is non existent (unless it is used to criticize). The “culture” that management talks about is hilarious because they love to say we have such great culture (aka free food occasionally), when that is a blanket statement that really means that employees don’t get paid enough and the benefits are Fargo-centric and do not cover a lot that people in Madison care about. If that’s not bad enough, advancement opportunities are focused towards people with a PhD rather than people with industry experience. Also, Aldevron has been avoiding workplace OSHA reportings after workers have been seriously injured. People involved were made to feel bad about their injuries even though they happened due to lack of management and safety measures. This made everyone nervous to talk about it in fear of losing their jobs. Overall, the “family” that we are told we are a part of is really just a disfuncional family that you want to be as far away from as possible. Don’t even bother applying here unless you only plan on staying for a few years.

Pros

Once you get hired and trained in, its pretty easy to get a raise if you threaten to leave. They need everyone they have and can't afford to lose anyone. Many of the supervisors and managers are great and are also suffering like everyone else. There is potential for a lot of overtime if you are only in it for the money. If you can learn about what several of the treatments are being used for, it does help you put value in your work. Some of these therapies are amazing to hear about. Get 1 year of experience here and you are set up to be highly desirable on the job market.

Cons

There will be lots of overtime, especially if you work the 2nd shift. Sometimes (usually 1-2 days of your 4 day work week) the shift goes from 3 pm to 4-7 am. Good luck trying to get a lunch break in. The managers and supervisors are struggling big time with a new online system that was integrated. This system is touchy and easily slows or cancels 1/3 - 1/2 of all production every day. If you have the patience to spend ~two hours clicking buttons just to move a container of media a couple hundred feet, this is perfect for you. Honestly, don't plan to stay for long. Come in, make some quick cash in a low cost of living area, get the biotech experience and get out after ~1 year. I have offers for $8.50/hr more and $35K/year more from two other companies at the moment in better places to leave. The company doesn't have much to offer you for long term growth. The only employees that get stuck here and move up are the ones with kids. The best shift to work in for GMP Manufacturing is 1st shift Upstream. From there its: 1st shift Upstream > 1st shift Downstream > 2nd shift Upstream > 2nd shift Downstream. The 2nd shift Downstream operators just look miserable if you walk by them. If you start as a lab tech you can usually move to an operator position within a year because they are afraid of losing you.
