A&M - Private Equity Performance Improvement

Pros

1) Challenging work environment - specially working at PE pace. You learn a lot in short period of time. 2) Bonus (which is big portion of total compensation) can be big if your utilization is high and meet goals 3) Relatively smaller group (Compared to Big 4), so easier to build network and get recognized

Cons

1) Leadership which doesn't know what EQ is. I was yelled at in an unprofessional way on a couple of occasions. People are outright rude and disrespectful This is boys club for lack of better words 2) Lack of integrity in actions. One thing is said in front and completely different thing will show up on actual performance reviews. 3) Long work hours. Expect 14 hour+ long days, everyday. Some Managing Directors are running sweatshops and are thankless for your efforts. 4) Work environment is very serious and there are hardly any lighter moments - even after being trapped in a small room for 14 hours everyday. It can be emotionally challenging at times. 5) Pay can look great while accepting offer, but bonus makes big portion of your pay. And if you are not staffed enough, then your bonus is negligible. So you are always stressed to meet your utilization goal, otherwise it directly impacts your end of your bonus 6) Staffing process is unstructured (if at all it exists!) Staffing manager would hardly respond to emails 7) Not much brand recognition. That can be challenging on exit opportunities

Toxic working enviornment

Pros

Exotic travel locales include Oklahama, New Jersey and Corpus Christi. Week after week! Year after year!

Cons

Repeat after me. Do. Not. Work. Here. Politics flow more freely than Trump's combover. Expect to find clicky working groups, zero training whatsoever and frequent hiring of family members. Alvarez and Marsal aka Nepotism City - where immediate family of Managing Directors, Partners, Senior Directors and so on are working in the same department with you. What favoristism? If you love being publicly ridiculed by your managers this is your kind of place. If you want to burn out quicker than Vanilla Ice this is the perfect gig for you. Want grey hair at 30, anxiety or depression? Look no further then Alvarez and Marsal. Fun fact: Alvarez and Marsal has never made Forbes Best Places to Work List. Accenture has.

Pros

Generally free of bureaucracy, but mostly because there are no processes worth mentioning and the word "meritocracy" is unknown to upper management. If they like you then you can do what you want.

Cons

This is a second rate organisation. The clients are generally middle-market and mid-tier. The leadership (outside of restructuring) are generally B players. The staff are a mix, with some A players (usually former MBB but some Big Four), a thick layer of B players, and a surprising number of Cs and Ds. There is limited accountability and sub-optimal cross-practice coordination. The variability between practices is high. Restructuring, Private Equity Performance Improvement, Tax, and Disputes and Investigations are first rate. Valuation is also very strong. Insurance has some strong personalities and generally is a good practice. Financial Services is a disaster. Poor leadership, exceptionally poor accountability, and poor decision making are rife. Avoid the cyber team there at all costs, the MD is incompetent (he even misspelled the company's own name on promotional material!). Corporate Performance Improvement needs someone who knows corporate performance improvement to improve their corporate performance, but has some good people. Back office functions are sloppy and weak. Basic capabilities such as time entry and travel booking are Stone Age.
