Partner Politics

Pros

Good bonuses assuming you work for a partner that lets you bill all of your hours. Interesting projects for the most part.

Cons

Partner politics are rampant and the ones with the best game theory strategy take all. Talent wars driven by senior management make team building next to impossible and results in overworked mid level managers and directors and low morale. Little room for the advancement of existing talent due to heavy non producing partners. Partners see marketing efforts of mid level management and directors as power threats rather than as a team effort to be rewarded. Too many staff hires on the friends and family plan complicates talent management process. Too much emphasis on utilization kills culture and staff development efforts.

Pros

Smart people, who work hard, care about their clients and solve interesting problems. Some great opportunities to work on interesting problems.

Cons

Some great people, but just as many not so great people. A male-dominated, white culture that has no plan to improve diversity in the firm (directly heard this from multiple different leaders). It is a hit or miss with what project you end up on and the leadership on that project. Ratings, promotions and bonuses are a black hole and based more on MDs liking a person rather than hard work. Expect long hours with very poor work-life balance.

Stuck in the dark ages

Pros

While the bonus can be lucrative, if you are working for one of the many "lone wolf" MDs, you'll likely never see what you should deserve

Cons

- Lack of cross-BU collaboration and approach to client service - B & C level talent, including many incompetent MDs who seem to be making it up and just talking the poor clients to death. - Really bad managers and no one holding them accountable for bad behavior. (Google the A&M harassment lawsuit - all MDs are still there.) - Bad benefits - limited fitness reimbursement, poor medical coverage, etc.
