Cons

Blatantly lied to by senior management about the pay and job entails. I was told very clearly that they were offering a 40k a year BASE salary. During training I asked when we were to start getting paid our base rate, the trainer looked at me like I was high, and responded with, "There is no pay. This is a commission only job." I was not the only one that was told there was a base salary, a handful of others in my training class were told the same thing. I was also lied to about the job details. I was told your appointments would be set for you, and that you got paid a bonus depending on how many appointments you actually went to, regardless if the client signed up for a life insurance plan or not. I came to find out during training they want you to make over 300 calls a week, most of which are cold. The "lead" packets they gave out to people might as well have been trash, some of the leads were so old they weren't even part of a union anymore.

Pros

I worked for American Income Life for a few months after graduating college. My degree is in journalism with an art minor, so I was pretty out of my element. I liked that the company had a diverse group of employees in terms of race, gender and age. I enjoyed getting to drive around and meet with clients in person instead of sitting in a cubicle all day. Some of the clients were super cool and gave me free food and beer. Most of my coworkers were really nice. Some people who were really good made a ton of money, but many people didn't.

Cons

They expected new employees to work about 80 hours a week, which made it very difficult to see my friends/family or have any hobbies outside of work. I gained some weight because that schedule made it difficult to find time to go to the gym. Fitness is a passion of mine, so it was hard for me to give that up. The pay was 100% commission, which meant that I couldn't pay my rent or buy food if I didn't sell enough. I had to ask my parents for financial assistance a few times, which was embarrassing. They could have at least paid us minimum wage for the required weekly meetings, classes, and phone appointment group sessions but they didn't because we were all 1099 independent contractors. I found it misleading how they promised us a flexible schedule during the initial interview, yet they required us to attend all those things. The final straw was when I requested a Sunday off because some extended family members were in town and I wanted to see them. I requested that day off weeks in advance, but my manager still called me multiple times throughout the day asking how much I'd sold. My family could tell I was angry and miserable and my parents told me they wouldn't be disappointed if I quit. I quit a week later, on the day before my 24th birthday, and let's just say I partied really hard that night. Haha.

Pros

Good money-earning potential and bonus structure, benefits (after a certain amount of time), yearly trip incentives, and long term financial plan

Cons

You are just a number, you are replaceable, corporate office won't stand behind anyone unless you are an SGA, and then you're infallible! We're talking 2 DUIs, or endorsing your employee's paychecks to yourself, and you still get to keep your office and 6-figure salary. 100% commission; my branch had a 6-day work week. Lots of initial deception in the hiring process (saying you're an "independent producer" and that you "run your own business", but mandating schedules and hours), so lots of turnover.
