Frustrating!

Pros

Simply, the residents. The residents are why so many people continue to stay at the facilities. So many lovely people who need cared for.

Cons

Extremely poor communication throughout the company, although some buildings are better at this than others. Unfortunately, there is no balance between work and home. The expectation is that managers will be available 24x7 to pick up hours, take phone calls, etc., and they are not compensated for it. It is not a family-friendly culture. The stress and workloads are high, nearly impossible to manage, for floor staff and managers alike. Unfortunately, bonuses offered to the DNS's and the ED's contribute to the problems, as they are highly rewarded for keeping floor staff to a bare minimum, inflating ADL scores, cutting any staff perks etc. There is an incredible amount of micro-managing throughout, stifling those who might otherwise bring a great deal "to the table", and exhausting those who are expected to carry out the protocols-meaning there is a lot of frustrated, tired, stressed staff. The situation is ripe for safety issues, staffing challenges, and unhappy residents and families.

Pros

When I am working, all of my other problems disappear. The residents are the best part of this job. People come here for rehab after surgery, memory care and long term care. I frequently get the chance to educate individuals about a disease process, medications and dietary suggestions.

Cons

Work load very high, with no time for breaks most days. I work evening shift and we get most of admissions on our shift. We are not respected or rewarded for our contributions.

Pros

Met some really nice coworkers.

Cons

Poorly staffed. Never know if you're going to get to leave at the end of your shift due to mandating. Management is too good to take a med cart. They'd rather let you work a double. Inadequate supplies, including appropriate tube feeding formulas and thickened liquids. Sometimes cnas dont even have washcloths to clean residents with. Management sweeps things under the rug and tries to cover things up. Cannot keep nurses. Corrupt! The place is going down fast.
