Once a great company to work for

Pros

The people (non-management) make it worthwhile to work at American Water - energetic, supportive, and innovative. The dedication to providing clean, safe water to the customers is clear in everything they do and they take great pride in serving the community.

Cons

Executive and middle management is increasingly unaware or uninterested in the employees who make the business possible, preferring to shift their focus toward leadership and profit. They are constantly changing the organizational structure to fit flavor-of-the-month business models and are oblivious to the instability and dissatisfaction this causes with what was once a workforce with an average tenure of 17 years. That average has declined rapidly over the last few years which illustrates the trajectory of this company quite clearly.

Comparable to an Abusive Relationship

Pros

Health benefits & 401k cannot be beat. Pay is good, but not like “WOW”

Cons

Management is kind of like being in a relationship with a cheating partner - lack of loyalty, growth, empathy and trust. You keep giving them chances to change, but they just keep letting you down.

Pros

Good annual raises and benefits package.

Cons

The Corporate Wheel will crush you if it gets ahold of you. Always this company is being "bought out" by "yet another" mysterious foreign company nobody has ever heard of, and next thing you know, they are doing a "re-org" which means people are going to get fired for no reason at all. The old-timers here still have a pension plan for retirement that they are working for and toward. I saw American Water release an employee for no reason known whatsoever, and he was within 6 months of reaching his golden date of hitting American Water's pension system and therefore being eligible for retirement!!!! You would knowingly kill a man's retirement after he has faithfully served you for 19.5 years???!!! It's that crap that scares you working for a company that employs such mercenaries.
