Modest pay and benefits. Job was stable I was a union puke. Union was a good safe guard from the wolves.

Cons

I was a former Northern Illinois Employee privately owned with a family business work environment. Northern Illinois was a local full service water company. American Water change the entire work environment with the bottom line mentality.

Pros

Great people to work with who genuinely care about what they do. The company continues to grow and has been financially sound and successful for many years. The pay is competitive and the benefits are good. There are opportunities for advancement, but you have to work hard to earn them.

Cons

The work/life balance isn't always the greatest as there are high expectations for employees to perform well. Often times performing well means putting in extra time. There's definitely pressure to perform well and if you're not able to, you can be replaced.
