Pros

Impeccable regulatory reputation. Amgen’s above and beyond approach (which is a con since it’s impossible to distinguish how much is done because of regulatory requirements and how much is done because Amgen likes to over complicate things) more than prepares you for moving on to another company!

Cons

I loved Amgen when I started working there 15years ago but it’s become such an incredibly toxic environment in every aspect! It’s so sad to see what it’s turned into. If Amgen thinks the open office concept will fix the culture, they’re sadly mistaken. Salaries are absurdly low! I got a $35k raise when I left Amgen! The longer you stay, the more underpaid you are!

Pros

IT started as one of the best companies to work for, by far. But market dynamics and the new exec team focused too much on cost cutting. Every year, something would be cut. A benefit here, a tax break there, ESPP, long term shares. Eventually the pay & benefits were simply not competitive and i got fed up and left for over double my former compensation. Combine that with some toxic bosses over the years, and, well, the best will leave for greener pastures.

Cons

Too many idiots. Toxic leaders afraid of real talent. People like that go into big companies to hide. Amgen is one such company. Lots of people from B and C rated schools, and it shows, in way too many positions. A's hire other A's. B's hire C's, and C's hire F's. That's Amgen.

Pros

Work life balance. 401k match.

Cons

Pay and titles not competitive with Pharma/Biotech industry. Amgen significantly underpays compare to equal sized competitors, ~10-60%. Especially considering expensive Thousand Oaks/Ventura/LA area. There are been many people leaving the Medicinal Chemistry group for higher offers, and more on the way. The Medicinal Chemistry group is offers PhD-level graduates with no Post-Docs the Senior Associate Scientist title, which is crazy, especially with low starting salary. It's no wonder why so many empty hoods. Good candidates are going other places. Career advancement is slow, but they will talk of fast promotions during interview process. There is lot of talk about the best science in industry at Amgen but there only been one small molecule drug that make it to market in the HISTORY of Amgen. A common saying you will hear a lot is Amgen is research based because research is on bottom.
