The largest employer in the area; a state institution - both the advantages and the disadvantages are what you'd expect.

Pros

You'll be working with some of the most educated and talented people in the High Country. Beautiful mountain landscape, beautiful campus, competitive salaries for the area, free classes for employees and state benefits that will take care of your family.

Cons

This organization is extraordinarily siloed. At previous organizations, I worked with other departments/teams on a regular basis. That has not been the case here. There is bureaucracy, politics and lack of motivation to streamline processes and/or leverage technology in order to work smarter, not harder.

IT Has Given Up

Pros

Great potential in my area. Learning and professional development is always supported. Great office culture and atmosphere.

Cons

Most of the IT seems to have given up. No ambition to take on big projects or really make an impact on student's lives. Most work is done to simply maintain the status quo. The "IT Governance" committees are full of people who have zero technology experience making ill-informed tech decisions, and are so large that they're completely counter productive. Promotion chances are slim. It takes an act of the Legislature (literally) to get any kind of raise.

A great job -- depending on your department.

Pros

I have a terrific job with decent pay, and the people I work with are hard workers who also know how to have fun. However, I work with other departments who are not run nearly as well as mine is. In a large university setting like this it can be difficult to keep everything cohesive. Poorly run departments are in the minority, however.

Cons

Pay could be better, but it is a state university.
