Boone is a great town environment wise Highly walkable campus Students are incredible to work with and excited about their futures Other pro staff are generally kind and accepting Pay is decent for starting out in this field

Cons

Boone cost of living is absolutely extreme compared to how much folks make here, even at the school Your experience with App is entirely dependent on your supervisor. You may have someone wonderful who is flexible and is open to hybrid options, let’s you make choices, and wants you to grow, or you could get stuck with what I have (the opposite). It honestly makes the job miserable even though I love this work, and upper management will always take each others sides if you report.

Pros

People have great intentions (or so they say and I mostly believed) The mountains are beautiful year around Cooler weather in the summer Seems to be growing

Cons

Lack of meaningful actions taken by administrators. They like to talk on end about improving the campus culture but it's all talk. I saw little evidentiary action taken in my time there. Do not get sucked into one of those committees. If you are a person of color or hold other non-cis-white identities, it's not going to be a great experience. I'll keep it at that. Burnout culture Poor business practices within departments, no accountability for destructive leaders.

Pros

The community of Boone, NC is an amazing place to live.

Cons

Old buildings with no real plan to update (my building had radon). The boasted 16:1 ratio is not true. My classes were always above capacity and usually 24:1 was more the average in my department. The administration is concerned with adding warm bodys (students) but not quality students and does not support the faculty. They do however support the sports programs- I mean isn't that why we go to college?
