Good company to work for, but bogged down by petty union negativity

Pros

- Lots of responsibility right out of college - Global company, well known industry - "Competitive" starting pay -

Cons

I have never seen a more entitled, whiny, group of adults than I've witnessed with the bargaining unit. Society to thinks millennials are the most entitled generation, but man baby boomer union steel workers give them a run for their money. "Fair contract now" How about "Fair salary now"? Union healthcare and pay are way better than the salaried side. It AMAZES me operators who sit on their phones all shift can whine about "unfair pay" while they make 100k+ a year and have one of the best healthcare plans in the country. On the contrast, a salaried engineer with more responsibilities than button pushing makes less pay, has worse healthcare, and gets treated like scum compared to the union. The salaried bonus is a joke compared to what the bargaining unit gets. Fair contract now? Give me a break, you don't know how well you have it.

Pros

The most money you will make in Northwest Indiana. Starting labor grade 1 $20.50 an hour. First is the PAN test, next the sandbag test ( this test is the hardest just take your time and don’t sit down ) then 2 interviews, and finally a hair drug test. Once your in you have to get 1040 working hours to fully get in the union. Now some people it have taken 2 months. It took me 5 months it just depends on how much over time you want to work. And in those 1040 hours they will surprise you with a pee test, then a hair test, and then another pee test. So just a heads up for that. Rotating 8 hour shifts. Some days you will sit around and do nothing and some days it’s non stop chaos. But the money is good.....I’m a labor grade 2 and with my insensitive pay I make about $2000 every two weeks and I only work about 8 hours over time in those two weeks.

Cons

Other people not wanting to do there job and just being plain lazy.....it the person you relieved didn’t do his job it gets pushed on you.....and if your relief doesn’t show up you are forced to stay over.

Pros

Base Salary for an engineer out of college was good Many opportunities for advancement due to an aging workforce, but usually requires relocation. Some teams are very tight night The overall day-to-day work is pretty slow and low stress unless something breaks or a major crisis occurs.

Cons

Significantly changed health care plan halfway through tenure -Went from a great healthcare system to a high deductible plan with a poor HSA incentive Some managers were resistant to change and at times made the job miserable. Other managers were accommodating, transparent, and open. Really a mixed-back Some departments had a tense work environment between union and salaried workers, but usually wasn't an issue day-to-day.
