Work, work-life balance, and culture great, other things sub-par

Pros

Great work-life balance Flexible time-off Quality work right from the get-go Superb culture of working as a team No politics across teams Easy to move across similar teams Easy to work on different kinds of projects, just ask your manager

Cons

Immigration department is lazy and too slow in getting things done. Need to push them at every step. Even after pushing them, there's no guarantee that things would get done on time. The team wasted 6-months of my time in applying for my PERM. There are other issues that I'm aware of through colleagues. Compensation is below-par. Employees need to be compensated more for the amount of work that they're made to do. If you prefer quality work with a very good team, learning more things, and you're okay with lesser compensation, then this is the place for you.

Pros

If you have lots of drive and initiatives, this is a great place for you. The open environment and helpful, talented colleagues will help you to get where you desire to be much faster than many other places. There are very few politics. The leaders are great engineers themselves. You get free parking for you and your friends when Levi stadium has an event.

Cons

The leaders are engineers -- sometimes they seem to spend a bit too much energy on not-so-important engineering problems, which I don't see why they cannot delegate, and too little energy on problems that will make the environment better, to motivate people better, to empower people, etc. The leaders also seemed to have some inabilities to push agenda, and as a result, had to rely on launching campaigns too often, especially lately. Which makes it harder to push the next time. Many years ago, it was probably true that all engineers were all-around. As the company grows, these all-around engineers are still encouraged. Which I think is wrong. It's better to encourage depth over breadth. An engineer might get rave feedback if he/she attempts something totally not in his/her area, and to some degree of success; yet for someone who focuses in some single area and gets to some great depth, his/her only reward is to deal with more mess in that area. Another example: an engineer performing a non-engineering duty may get recognized and peer-bonus, but why cannot the HR step up and leave the engineers focused AND recognize better engineering work? Over the last few years, the culture definitely lost a great bit.

A poor experience for a great company

Pros

- Solid company with great vision, doing amazing things in the networking industry - Wonderful corporate HQ and great remote benefits - Good pay and benefits

Cons

- Lack of direction from all sides, coworkers or management. - Supreme lack of training, no idea what the daily tasks were or how to learn about new tech. Was basically directed toward internal documentation and left alone with out much input. - Tried to build a cohesive environment for remote workers but it was immediately apparent that you were on an island with out a life raft. Documentation can only tell you so much. - Encouraged to write documentation and experiment but never given a specific purpose. It's difficult to solve/write about imagined problems. - Colleagues seemed to only be concerned with bashing competition and making a sale. - General merits of the product were highlighted in an effort to bash competition, even if those merits were half baked. - Told there was no on call schedule but was demanded to be available 24/7 and work late hours if needed. - When feedback was asked for it was non-existent.
