Not a bad place to work

Pros

The company is generous and has good people working for it. Vacation time, bonuses and other general 'perks' are very nice. Also, the leadership has traditionally always been caring, understanding and good natured-particularly on the lower levels. The work-life balance is good

Cons

Lots of reshuffling and reorganizing, some amount of layoffs. There seems to be many rungs missing in the career ladder and growing within the company has become difficult. Promotions seem to happen from outside of the company, and management coming in from elsewhere almost always has an idea of how things should be done without really taking the time to see what has already been working.

A great place to start your career

Pros

- Good leadership among middle management - Strong company reputation in key disciplines - Opportunities to advance or move within organization - Maybe just my luck, but I worked with some amazing people - If you start your career here, you inevitably make connections with people who go on to other publishing companies, which can help your future career prospects

Cons

- Strategic direction was lacking. There were a lot of "big picture" initiatives that were designed to help us redefine ourselves in the marketplace. A lot of these projects failed to get off the ground, or worse, were heavily invested in and then dismantled halfway through. - Compensation and raises were less than stellar for the industry - Not much departmental infrastructure to allow for promotions. You had to wait years for at title change.

No direction, leadership, accountability, or unity.

Pros

Flexible work schedule and located in a convenient location.

Cons

Ascend just unveiled their new corporate values. In a meeting to discuss the new values the person running the meeting informed her team that, "happiness is not a value." That is pretty much all you need to know about Ascend.
