A Company In Desperate Need of Leadership

Pros

•Flexible PTO •Telecommuting options for some positions •Several options for medical / dental / vision coverage •Opportunity for quick growth due to high turnover •Onsite cafeteria •Has the potential to be an innovative company if they can find the right leadership •Has the potential to develop great products, if employees can learn to take small risks and get over their fear of failure •This would be a good place to work while finishing a degree due to flexible PTO

Cons

•Extremely high turnover. Talented staff are quick to leave and there's no effort to retain them. Leaders appear to be afraid to take the risks necessary to grow the company. •Salaries are below industry standards, raises are rarely given, and promised bonuses aren't always delivered. •There is a serious lack of technical literacy company-wide, which is ironic since Ascend positions itself as a technology company •Communications company-wide is very fractured, resulting in low productivity and low morale •Many employees seem driven by a fear of losing their jobs (due to the high turnover around them) rather than driven by a desire to produce innovative products

Pros

From the beginning, the onsite gym, pay, benefits, people, and overall environment at the work site were great.

Cons

Big company bureaucracy, poor annual process reviews, no encouragement around career development, shifting of "strategic" priorities. Ever since the company was sold to a mid-size company and then almost immediately bought out by an investment firm, there has been constant process change that caused tension in the work environment. Constant upper management change, constant process change (no stable processes), unrealistic year end goals for business units, frequent layoffs (to help increase the bottom line).

Pros

Very good place to start your career. There isn't much assistant-type work to do, so you're given the opportunity to work learn very quickly. You can work on books from other disciplines, giving you varied knowledge, both about subject matter and about how different people work. And no matter what department you work in, you get exposure to working with almost all other departments.

Cons

This is not a place to grow. Pay increases were not great, nor was there much difference between being an assistant and an editor. Once you master your position, it's best to move on. Also, your employee experience is almost entirely dependent upon who your direct supervisor and manager are. Also, be aware that this company is not located in Boston, and a car is required to get to work.
