Incredibly toxic work environment at an organization stuck in the past.

Proximity to brilliant and well-connected people, if you care about that.

Cons

Long hours and low pay mixed with a toxic culture of stress and overwork makes for a pretty miserable experience. Sure you'll get to interact with some big names, but it seems everyone convinces themselves that having no life outside of work is a worthy trade-off. Also HEAVILY reliant on the work of unpaid interns.

Leadership is dysfunctional but the staff makes up for it at great cost (human capital primarily).

A group of dedicated staff who go above and beyond for the institution. Leadership takes advantage of this.

Cons

There was always this weird tension between the two presidents, although now there's one president who's also in charge of a sub-department. To begin with, I have never worked at a nonprofit with two presidents, which explains the constant, invisible turf fight. The staff knows this because the tension ultimately affects their daily work, thus creating silos between colleagues and departments.

You get to put on many hats and gather a lot of experience in a range of issues.

Cons

The sections of Asia Society I dealt with were severely understaffed, resulting in an overwhelming amount of work, while being underpaid. There's also a quite a bit of turnover.
