Pros

You won’t get laid off. If that’s important enough to you to han

Cons

For those enough that have been around a while, we know the story well. Following the retirement of Jeff Harrold, the company has been in a steady and consistent declined marred by incapable leadership at all levels. Auto-Owners doesn’t not value any unique thought or want their management to discern for themselves. The result is a long line of under qualified corporate servants unable to think or make decisions for themselves, and upper management wouldn’t have it any other way. All decisions are made at the top, by an incompetent executive team, and values and opinions of employees are not considered in the slightest. The company operates under the guise of “prudence” to the point they are a laughing stock among agencies and other carriers. Pay has been mentioned countless times in these reviews and I can confirm that for experienced underwriters or claim reps, your pay will be 30-40% less than similar other companies. This is mainly a concern for experienced employees, as Auto-Owners typical hiring strategy is to hire right out of college with no experience, which allows them to pay underwriters $45,000 a year,

Pros

Good benefits once you work there for 3+ years, the PTO gets better and the Christmas bonus goes up 1% until it's capped at 10%. Good colleagues to work with.

Cons

Senior leadership often promotes based on politics rather than performance. Some managers appear to consistently underperform but continue to rise through the ranks. Lack of accountability at the top has led to poor strategic decisions and low team morale. Feedback from employees is often ignored or downplayed. Not a lot of room for advancement unless you live or are willing to relocate to Michigan.
