Pros

Talented, thoughtful coworkers who genuinely care about doing good work and supporting one another. Many managers genuinely try to protect their teams and advocate upward within real constraints. Generally flexible work arrangements and managers who, at an individual level, are extremely supportive.

Cons

The Vista Equity acquisition marked a significant shift in company priorities, with an increased focus on cost-cutting that has had lasting cultural and operational impact. Repeated rounds of layoffs, including long-tenured, U.S.-based employees, have created persistent job insecurity and loss of institutional knowledge. Work is increasingly shifted to lower-cost regions without sufficient transition planning, documentation, or resourcing, placing additional burden on remaining teams. Frequent restructures, leadership changes, and shifting priorities makes it difficult to execute long-term strategy. Teams operating with very low headcount are routinely asked to deliver more, faster, and with higher complexity, often without corresponding support or realistic timelines. High performers are relied upon to absorb risk, ambiguity, and workload creep, which leads to burnout and quiet attrition. Decision-making and ownership are often unclear, resulting in duplicated effort, rework, and slow progress despite intense individual effort.

Pros

Competitive pay and solid benefits package. The company does invest in employee perks and compensation is generally above average. You’ll also find that many of the people you work alongside are talented, collaborative, and genuinely great to work with.

Cons

Avalara recently announced a 15% reduction in force, but the way it’s being handled feels deeply unethical. Rather than acknowledge the downsizing directly, leadership frames it as part of a “high performance culture.” In reality, that means constantly shifting performance metrics so that even strong contributors can be labeled as low performers. This approach allows the company to terminate people without severance while avoiding the bad publicity of a large layoff. It creates instability, erodes trust, and makes it difficult for employees to feel secure in their roles.

Complete hatchet job I'm afraid

Pros

Some smart folks and lots of 'good souls' trying to do right by their teams and the company.

Cons

Too many to list now - read the reviews and not the ones generally from Pune if you want the real story here in the US. It seems cliche - but Vista's playbooks are well known and Avalara is in the middle of the reduce costs, outsource and shine up so it can be taken public again. They are firing people quietly via any means possible - mostly PIP's that are not achievable. This is part of the playbook so bad press isn't in the open public. So unfortunate but can't say I fault shareholders - they made money. The company - orange is not so much orange anymore as blood red.
