Pros

*A lot of experience, but not enough direction or support though *A lot of different industries, but are owned by Private Equity firms that don't care about those companies. Their just milking them for the cash and BDO is part of the game.

Cons

*Pay is below the market in our area *PTO is below the market *Not enough direction or support *Spread thin during busy-season. Hours are bad, but it would be easier if you only had one client to focus on at a time. At our office, you have too much overlap in your clients. *Tone at the top is terrible where it seems partners and mangers don't actually care about you. *Possibly unethical - only care about keeping costs low with very little concern of doing the audit right. *They keep on getting hammered by PCAOB inspections, and for right reason. They don't value the importance of the audit. They only see it as a way of making money instead of as a value-added service to investors.

Great Company on paper, but NOT in reality

Pros

Great core values on paper; women's initiative program is great (again on paper); compensation and benefits packages are on par with the big four; it is a growing company with a lot of potential (if they could keep employees)

Cons

Senior management is very clique like - Senior managers regularly gossip about employees. Training is almost non-existant. The lack of communication in this office is astounding. The lack of internal promotion is concerning. Turn over is very high, yet management does not seem to want to address the issues.

Your feedback, while discouraging, is important. Thank you for sharing it. Our core values should be alive every day in our behavior. I personally know many situations where the Women's Inititaive has played a concrete role to make a differenct to women who would otherwise have considered alternatives, and our we make very significant investiments in online, locally conducted and national training...one of which is going on right now in Dallas! So, how we make this real for you is the question....have you expressed yourself to your career advisor, managing partner or HR professional? If you are not comfortable doing so, you are welcome to call me.

Pros

Its a place of employment Limited travel opportunities Office network

Cons

Terribly run company that relies on overworking employees throughout the year. In my opinion, bdo operates like it's stuck in the past. The company uses outdated software and processes for work that is already being automated by companies both in and outside of public accounting. For them to claim that one of their core values is "embrace change" is laughable. The company operates on a churn and burn model for its hiring- overworking new hires in the first couple busy seasons to extract the most billable hours, only for those employees to burn out and leave. It wouldn't surprise me to find out if they have the highest attrition rate in the business. There is no real direction from the top on where the firm is headed or how they differentiate themselves. This shows in the ambiguous "culture" the company claims to have. Those in leadership can't clearly articulate what this "culture" actually is beyond the usual buzzwords. During busy season, certain offices hoard work leading to extreme and unnecessary burnout for employees. To make things worse, the admin task of having to constantly confirm and coordinate what clients you're working on (even if there are no changes) creates an unnecessary burden for client-facing professionals. I get that it's public accounting and it comes with the territory to expect long hours, but the inefficiencies and the lack of forward-thinking leadership at bdo make for a terrible working environment.
