Pros

BECU is still immensely member focused. Majority of the executives care about the members and communities served. Legacy executive leadership is stellar. It feels and it is that BECU cares for its employees through benefits and employee voice is heard and valued. BECU rightfully recognizes that brand strength in itself will not carry interests of our members, but them where they are and how they want to be served is mission critical. All good here. The sad part is that BECU leadership has lost its way in terms of hiring senior leaders. This is apparent especially in technology and digital transformation. The whole transformation has been handed over to C-level executives who have not had any experience transforming. It is apparent from their short tenures at prior organizations. But they were hired, and there is mass confusion across the credit union. Hopefully, the new CEO recognizes and makes urgent changes.

Cons

Digital transformation is a mess. Leaders across technology, engineering, architecture, data have no experience leading and framing transformation. They themselves are confused and cannot articulate why things are the way they are. Senior leadership has resorted to serious politics and what is really being generated is beautiful PowerPoint decks. But that is how it has been for the past 3 years. A lot of decks and people who know how to present, but with little progress. Paying significant $ to tier-1 consulting firms who are happy to cash in on delivering PowerPoint messaging. BECU used to be an environment where folks would jump into any problem and make things happen on behalf of its members. Now it is all about looking good individually. Starting with the highest level of technology and engineering leadership, they have created an environment of distrust and favoritism.

Your Manager Matters

Pros

If you are lucky enough to land one of the good managers, you will like it here. Once upon a time, you had work-life balance. It is easy to move up if you know the manager personally or play politics right.

Cons

The inability to hire competent leaders plagues this organization. With each leadership change, the quality deteriorates further. I have personally endured the indignity of being yelled at, micromanaged, belittled, and explicitly told that I fell short of the new manager's expectations. What's worse, I have witnessed leaders colluding against disliked employees, deliberately fostering a hostile environment to drive them away. The exodus of talented individuals from this place is a regular occurrence, as they have lost faith in HR and upper management to address the incompetence of directors and middle managers. It is disheartening to witness BECU's decline, fueled by the influx of subpar hires in crucial positions. To compound the injustice, I have even witnessed one of these inept directors ascend to the role of VP, despite HR's knowledge of their tyrannical past. The abysmal state of HR here is truly unprecedented and deeply saddening. My advice to prospective employees is to consider this place only as a last resort, as the gamble of ending up with a bad manager remains ever-present.

Pros

Pays well, great experience/training/resources/, great encouragement. Great potential in a company to start out...

Cons

Lack of connection between Retail workers and all remote/corporate workers - backoffice and intercommunications are terrible. Very rare career advancement opportunities INTERNAL - they really like to hire external and keep you where you're at. As far as Retail goes, the company likes to say you're "the most valuable face of the company, etc" and will not accommodate or actually show it. In my years there, they took an ANNUAL survey from frontline staff to ask how we were doing in day to day working environment, which doesn't sound so bad until you find out they change websites, policies, and almost everything you do in your day to day job without asking for your input, or feedback.
