Pros

Benefits Holiday Pay Discount on loan rates Learn a lot about financial health Co-workers are usually great

Cons

Terrible training. Recruiter misquoted hours for PT. Manager changed scheduled hours without consulting me. Concierge role doesn't receive any incentive pay. Others hired in "pay grade" above me with no degree or banking experience over me; I was told that since I didn't have banking experience they could only offer me the lowest entry point position (I'm a college graduate). IMPOSSIBLE to guarantee PTO if you're in the branches. No flexibility in start or end times, unless planned weeks to months ahead; I don't know how anyone can buy a house, have a baby, or have outside hobbies when the days off are constantly rotating, FT employees don't get 2 days off in a row. Long hours! Some FT employees will pull 10-12 hour days (7am mtg, 8:30am-6:15pm shift, get stuck until 7pm because someone walked in 2 minutes before closing wanting to open an account.

Pros

The team members care about the welfare of their team-mates and of our members. Our frontline team lives our values more than anywhere else in our organization. Experiences feel genuine.

Cons

Leadership is changing very fast, possibly too fast for what BECU is. There has been a very large influx of outside leadership from much larger and some failed/failing banks, that don't fit the culture and heart of the credit union. Difficult to say how to change this, because they are in charge. We are a non-profit and membership-based organization, they focus a lot on profit-like products, services and investments. Does not match our membership make-up. Who are we trying to serve?

High Turnover?

Pros

I retired from BECU and it was great all the way until it was time to hang up my door pass. The work environment was relaxing and access to management was an open door policy. Pay was competitive complemented with hard work. Everyone was friendly and support staff were more than willing to help when the going gets tough.

Cons

The sales goal that could make or break an employment; a seemingly tedious form of quality control that puts everyone on their toes adding more stress to the already pressure cooker environment in trying to meet sales goals; employee turnover, while it's good for BECU's bottom line it impacts the quality of work and efficiency. Case in point, I closed on an auto loan just recently and the consultant who has worked for BECU for a year just made too many mistakes. This in turn put additional burden when I had to contact BECU the following workday to have them change the contract. Call center loan reps could not even give me a simple bi-weekly calculation when all variables were available. Last but not the least, there's no denying the fact that after the subprime crisis, the feeling that BECU has metamorphosed into a profit driven organization is out in the open. At least that's how I see it too.
