Pros

I joined BS&A less than a year ago and I am very happy with my decision. Coming from a larger company, the lack of bureaucracy has been a welcome change for me. I have been impressed with the overall quality of the employees, and have felt welcome from the moment I stepped in the door. The work environment is laid-back and the company is very accommodating with regards to needs outside of work. The benefits package almost seems too good to be true – one concern I had with coming to a smaller company was that the health insurance premiums would kill me. In fact, the current arrangement is great for employees and turned out to be a huge positive in the total compensation. As a developer, I enjoy the degree of freedom I am given over my work. Once a project has been assigned to you, you are largely in control over all the details from the data model to the installation process, and everything in between. It certainly is a challenge, but it keeps the work interesting and gives a sense of pride and ownership over projects as you complete them.

Cons

As with any smaller company, one could argue that there is not much room for career advancement. While this may be true to some extent, from what I have seen those that consistently deliver are rewarded for it. You might not get a huge promotion or a fancy title, but there is plenty of room for growth nonetheless. One room for improvement would be in the area of quality assurance. The company is highly committed to doing whatever it takes to make a customer happy, but at times features are rushed out the door before they have been adequately tested.

Pros

Not hung up on certificates as a driving factor for hiring. They value work ethic and willingness to learn and grow as an IT professional in the software industry and they provide every opportunity to do just that. They also reward hard work in several different ways. Another reason is the professional atmosphere. Having come from another software vendor it is refreshing to really see how software development can be done correctly and very succesfully. It is also a breath of fresh air to see how they provide one on one human support to all of there customers and frequently go above and beyond to help customers with all of their problems inlcuding ones that are not related to their software specifically.

Cons

I would say one of the downsides would be the location. While it is athestically pleasing where they are located it is somewhat remote. I am still fairly new to the company so my cons are rather short due to how good they have been to me thus far. Another con I have noticed is maybe a few too many knowledge bottlenecks in certain areas where the information is not spread as widely as it should about some of the programs. The other items that I have noticed is a lack of a solid sales and marketing dept to start pushing outside of the state to grow. While I noticed recently that they have been trying to change that, those effects are not yet seen.
