It’s unfortunate that HR is constantly posting fake reviews in an attempt to hide how horrible this company is. Don’t believe them, they are the obvious posted with no real insight associated with them. Here are some reasons why you should never work here: 1) The CEO has no real business experience. His only skill is leveraging his families money to keep himself busy. 2) The turnover of staff is incredible. People get tired of being lied to. 3) The product is non-competitive and is a patchwork of different services based on whatever thought the CEO thinks might work that day. 4) The employees are burnt out. 5) Nobody except management actually makes any money. The sales team never achieves unrealistic quotas, there are no realistic stock / option incentives (look at the vesting period...impossible to achieve) and end of year bonuses aren’t even a consideration. Ask almost any outside tech recruiter about the firm and they will tell you why they avoid this firm at all costs.

Our experience with Glassdoor is that it has a sophisticated audience who is able to decipher between an authentic review with positive intent and other types of reviews. As an industry leader, we are very proud of the culture we’ve built and are still trying to evolve and grow. Our talent retention is well above the tech industry benchmarks, and have been tracking at over 80% retention for the last two years. We’re also quite proud of our recent award as runner up for Chicago’s Best Tech Workplace for Diversity recognized at this year’s Timmy Awards by Tech in Motion. One of our top accomplishments this year is our ability to attract a lot of top talent from the industry, and we do that largely through employee referrals and social networking. Our very recent infusion of $20M in capital creates value for all of our people who share in it through equity. That said, Backstop is not for everyone and we have high performance standards. It’s unfortunate that competitors or recruiters use negative selling tactics, but we recognize it is a reality. Our choice is to approach the market through a positive position of strength, with an unwavering commitment to help solve the top problems our clients face in the institutional investment industry.

Fun culture but bad with money (back in '07 anyway)

Lots of perks, good benefits

Cons

Spent too much money on things they shouldn't be spending a lot of money on. When the recession hit in 2008, everyone who wasn't profit generating was fired to keep the place running as a result.

We do have lots of perks and good benefits! Thanks for acknowledging those, and we suspect the total package is even better today (with more recent additions of unlimited PTO, 401k match, personal learning budgets, lots of fun events + tech meet ups, etc.). You must have been a formative part of who we are today during those very early start-up years! Our People & Development team checked around a little, and no one really remembers the event you are referencing nearly ten years ago. We are always happy to address feedback, but apologize that on this one we’re at a loss. No doubt, 2008 was a rough time for most companies. Backstop is a very different place today with a lot of growth and many new people, including those on the leadership team. We’re glad to have been part of your journey, and best wishes.

Just another crummy company

Pros

There are some great people at the worker bee level and it is cool working in the Willis tower. The gym there is awesome.

Cons

There are worse places to work but what makes Backstop a sad story is having watched it change from a place that was really special and that you believed in to just another corporate dump rife with all the bureaucracy and egos and daily nonsense that come along with that. They are trying to grow and hold onto that startup feel but are failing miserably. Its evident if you look at the Glassdoor rating history, it was all positive until 2016 and then you see the dip. Its directly connected to Clint taking over as CEO. The guy has absolutely no business sense and is surrounded by yes people that just go along with whatever dumb idea he has at the time. Its hard to convey in words the general lack of faith in him or the ability for the company to turn around with him at the helm. Not to mention the software is buggy, outdated, not at all user friendly and therefore difficult to sell. Things like the free snacks lose their luster after a while. The "unlimited" time off seems like a great perk until you try to take advantage of it and realize they're not staffed to support such a policy so it only leads to frustration. Salaries are average at best and getting paid monthly is AWFUL!! If you're Ok with working at just another corporate place then Backstop will do but its definitely not anything special like they try to sell it. If you can get hired here you can get hired some place better.

We are working hard to evolve our culture, and the reality is that some infrastructure is necessary to scale and grow. That might seem corporate to some, and we own that we’re not a startup anymore. Our CEO does his best but isn’t perfect, however, his door is always open for feedback and he is accessible pretty much 24-7-365. He’s counting on our people to individually commit to contributing to our success, and knows he can’t build a great workplace alone. Glad you had the chance to experience our great people and perks. We’re very excited to have an awesome gym to add to our work environment, and the new collaboration space in Willis Tower is amazing. We sincerely wish you well and hope your new gig feels less crummy by your standards.
