A flop of a company

Pros

The people are some of the greatest coworkers I’ve ever had

Cons

Bandwidth’s response to covid was and still has been a disaster. The aggressive return to office plan (“plan” as in “everyone come back on June 2nd”) was obviously not received well, and leadership showed little care for employee’s concerns, and even made statements such as “If you want to WFH this isn’t the place for you” and “There will be covid cases in the office”. And don’t listen to any of the responses here from Bandwidth saying that flexibility has always been an option; it hasn’t. I know of at least 1 employee who was fired for wanting to continue to WFH. They backed off and became a bit more lenient after a huge backlash in slack, but this was too late. Also, covid cases have been regularly occurring in the office, and only recently has leadership been transparent about these cases. The tech (software) org needs help. In the 3 years I’ve been at Bandwidth. the company has grown 3X in employee size (excluding the Voxbone acquisition), yet the tech org has experienced minimal growth. Hiring priorities are heavily skewed to the product and sales orgs, and these orgs are continually putting more pressure on the tech org. You can’t expect more out of the tech org if you don’t hire enough software developers. This pressure also leads to low quality software being built. Time for design, planning, scaling, and tech debt cleanup is not there, and products are basically released as beta features and never become stabilized.

A company that holds true to their core values

Pros

The people. Bandwidth has some of the best people I’ve ever worked with. They have people who are willing to go out of their way to help you. They have strong leadership that sticks to the foundation on what this company was built on. David Morken has always been who he is & that’s why he’s so successful. It’s takes a tough individual to not only build an empire but to maintain it. He holds true to his morals & values which is rare to find these days. He doesn’t push them on anyone but he does expect you to uphold your end of bargain as any good leader should. This is a place you can be truly be who you are, whatever that may look like.

Cons

Too many employees who have a victim mentality. They rather sit & complain behind a screen than bring it up to their senior management.

Could have been amazing, leadership failed to deliver.

Pros

Pockets of really amazing people scattered throughout the organization. Work life flexibility and having the ability to go home at a decent hour. Good healthcare benefits. Good career growth and opportunities depending on the team.

Cons

Where to start…work should be work not a place of worship (prayer at all hands meetings, “be fruitful and multiply” verse on kids of BW posters). When the CEO refuses to acknowledge or take a political stance on BLM (totally fine) because BW as a corporation can’t take a stance on political matters however that doesn’t seem to apply to bringing conservative values into the organization. Be prepared to be micromanaged by your leaders. Most promotions into leadership positions are awarded to “yes” people not to those challenging the way things should be. Historically leaders who disrupt the way things have been done usually get frustrated very quickly and move on to other companies. Lower than market pay, internal promotions are usually lower than external market promotions. Lack of diversity across the board with what seems to be little to no focus from the HR team to define a diversity strategy. COVID strategy was very poorly executed, it was very clearly charged by the CEOs lack of respect for science and proper health protocols. I remember very clearly at the beginning of the pandemic where at an AMA he said he “wanted to go to China, get the virus and survive”, it was very awkward to hear that. It was clearly communicated that the company is an in office culture and their long term strategy was to return to office but forcing everyone to return on the same day without requiring proof of vaccination was irresponsible then eventually failing to report to the entire organization multiple outbreaks leading to a chief of people telling those who wanted answers and communication was to “stand down” (in a company wide slack group) was cherry on top. In addition to that, you have leaders who get very defensive when you provide any feedback that doesn’t fit their narrative. Bandwidth was once an excellent place to work and it still is if you fit into their mold. If you are a person of faith and ideally white you will thrive. If you are looking for an innovative and forward thinking organization with autonomy to succeed and be your authentic self in the workplace, this isn’t it. The positive reviews referring anyone who dares to include any criticism as “cry babies” speaks volumes to the type of people happy there.
