A Company that has Lost Itself

Pros

Without a doubt the best part of Bandwidth are the employees and the people that make up a bulk of its workforce. There is great talent and brainpower here that is sadly being entirely squandered and mismanaged. In terms of overall job pros, Bandwidth does have some decent benefits. Healthcare is mostly taken care of and the company offers incentives for having babies, which is nice if you're looking to become a parent here but also a bit disturbing that a job's benefit is so deeply rooted in the CEO's fundamentalist Christian beliefs, reinforced time and time again by posters saying "be fruitful and multiply" that line the hallways of the office buildings. The overall culture is decent, typical "tech startup" vibe. Lots of jeans and shorts, beer and coffee, etc. Good workout/fitness culture if you're in to that sort of thing - gym access is subsidized and workouts are encouraged during the famous "90 minute lunch"

Cons

For starters, the entire past year has exposed senior leadership and CEO David Morken as essentially COVID-deniers. Bandwidth reluctantly had employees WFH at the start of the pandemic while also hinting to everyone that they should keep coming in to the office with constant reminders that the company never "closed", free catered lunches daily to people who worked fully on-site, etc. All the while, Bandwidth's official policy was no masks allowed in the office because of a 'culture of fear' or some such nonsense. After about 6 months there was a huge push to return to office, pre-vaccine and while cases were still spiking. And during all this, senior managers continued to work in the office and there was an obvious disdain for people WFH due to COVID, with CEO David Morken telling one inquiring employee on a company wide call that if he was still concerned about getting sick, Bandwidth was "probably not the place for him to work". All of this no doubt ties in to the die-hard Christian Conservative senior leadership circle, that begins company meetings with a prayer and, as I stated previously, focuses on childbearing to an almost unhealthy degree. All of this is to say nothing of the low pay (engineers and devs should expect about 15k less than industry average), low PTO day amount and no rollover, no WFH allowed AT ALL unless sick etc, and a generally pretty toxic good-ol-boy culture.

Thank you for your feedback. Our unique culture is built on the close collaboration and creative energy of working in person. That’s why we’re building a new headquarters campus with great amenities to continue growing in a culture of being together. We encourage Bandmates to reach out to their manager or People Services to address special circumstances.

Pros

Bandwidth has some of the most genuinely nice people I have ever met. It doesn't matter what department you are in, everyone is friendly and willing to help. If you want to stay at Bandwidth, Bandwidth will help you get to where you want in your career. I've never had a manager be so helpful and committed to helping me move to another position not in the same dept, They are always focused in your career growth and willing to help you get to where you want AS LONG as you put in the work. This is not a company you can slack off and expect to get promoted. From day 1, it was made VERY clear that we would return back to the office. Yes, it may be a little sooner than people expected but this has always been the plan. Enough employees are vaccinated, this is as good of a time than ever.

Cons

When covid was at its worst, I think the covid response could have been handled better. Employees lead by example and I think the CEO let his personal beliefs get in the way of a proper response. Despite what other reviews may say, the CEO does not push his personal beliefs on anyone. Any prayer he does, he acknowledges that you don't have to participate if you don't want to. I am not a religious person by any means and this does not bother me or offend me.
