Pros

The pay at BankUnited is far above the norm in my area for a similar position and the branches are nicely styled. C-level management very good at what they do, aside from their ultimate goal.

Cons

Culture is very cutthroat, not cohesive at all, and you are expected to have BU as your first priority, not family. Upper level management is overwhelmed at best, pretty out to space in reality. High stress for sales, low lending approval rates (40% of your goal), poor operational support, nobody knows the proper procedure for anything, to go along with a computer system that is a mash-up of about 10 different vendors all trying to work together. Flavor of the month sales goals based on what the C-level is focusing on to get cashed out and sell the company. The organization structure leaves few positions for upward advancement, but thankfully, if that's your goal, there is a lot of turnover, and you may get lucky. The only way they will direct deposit your paycheck is to a BankUnited account, forcing you to use their services. Watch your time closely if you are hourly. You are not allowed to personalize your work area at all, with the unofficial motto being that it should look like nobody works there. Benefits aside from salary are marginal at best.

Pros

Some truly talented individuals work at BankUnited. Some were lured from other banks like BB&T, SunTrust, and Regions and brought over their clients as well. The branch network has a much friendlier culture than the headquarters in Miami Lakes, FL. Beware if you are thinking about working at the corporate center.

Cons

Unfortunately for me, my fairly large department was run by a treacherous fear monger who instilled terror and anxiety into those who dared oppose him. People would speak in hushed whispers about him in the hallways only to scurry away like cockroaches when a manager or supervisor would come too near. I mistakenly trusted too many people who ended up being gossips and would run to HR or management to tattle tale. Working at the corporate center is kind of like an episode of Game of Thrones where you don’t know who is friend or foe and you are always looking over your shoulder while trying to climb over the fallen corpses of your former comrades to elusive success or promotion. The only difference is that BankUnited is not nearly as entertaining as Game of Thrones. Office Space's INITECH and BankUnited have stark similarities. "Uh yeah, we're gonna need those TPS reports..." Employee Relations – Engage at your own risk. HR will be quick to take sides, and if you side against someone higher ranking than you (or them) you are most assuredly going to lose. My advice if you are dead set on working here: find a market and manager than you really like and feel that you can trust, then you will be somewhat shielded from the bologna politics and poor culture of the corporate center. If you want to be a headquarters person, then form strong allies and be very careful because you never know who may be listening in! Be ready to be spoken to like a kindergartener if you don't do exactly what they say.
