Important things to consider

Pros

Small hospital environment. Nice modern facility. Some wonderful people working there. The recreational opportunities around South Lake Tahoe are outstanding.

Cons

Some arrogant and imbalanced people also working there. Not everyone can be trusted, so watch your back. Be careful to know who your friends and enemies are. Something that may (or may not have) improved my situation would have been to request a different person in my department under which to train. (Pay attention to any bad vibes you are getting.) Management puts on a professional face, but at least in my case, I feel they did not act in accordance with the organization's so-called "Just Culture." Fired within two months without much warning. Some equipment and software is good, but others are buggy and confusing. This will mess you up; at least it did in my case. Be sure to have money saved up and have a backup plan. Avoid locking yourself into any lease until you can reasonably determine that your position is secure. Exorbitant rents means you will be paying an arm and a leg for local housing, living in small cramped living quarters, or commuting from Carson City (which is still somewhat expensive). Up in South Lake Tahoe is likely that you will not be able to find anything reasonable at a price you can afford. The best deals are the prior motel rooms that are now rented out month-to-month (try to find a complex with a community kitchen). However, noisy low-class neighbors partying all night, and intrusions of cigarette and marijuana smoke through the vents, can (and did) sometimes make living there a nightmare. Commuting from Carson City in the winter during snowstorms means a normal 40 minute commuting times can easily more than double. Traffic from roads packed with tourists is often a significant frustration. If you commute from Carson City, you may as well seek a job at a hospital down there instead. (If you can't actually live in South Lake Tahoe, then why bother the time, hassle, and expense of commuting to work there?) Understand there are the same toxic politics which have crept into most all hospitals these past few years. Overall, given all of the above, why put yourself through all that?
