Pros

Your coworkers are pretty knowledgeable.

Cons

1) you’ll be underpaid. The company does not pay the going rate of your field. 2) you’ll be overworked and told you just need to work harder from upper management. 3) if you don’t work in HQ in Ohio, you essentially don’t exist to the company. When things “improve” they only improve for HQ. I lost 2 days of PTO a year because company moved to 9/80. Our group wasn’t allowed to. 4) managers only want to discuss salary when you have two feet out the door. 5) you’ll be asked to take over tasks completely out of your technical realm because “work needs to get done” or “you’re not making Battelle any money in this contract that you didn’t write.” 6) You won’t own any of your original ideas. All of your IP will be owned by Battelle no matter what and if you don’t give any it will be held against you come pay raise time 7) Battelle’s code of ethics does not apply to managers, only to low level employees.

Discrimination and workplace bullying are rampant

Pros

Good parking spots available because they have gotten rid of so many people.

Cons

Manager blatantly discriminated against team members who were not up to his ethical and moral code. Think evangelical Baptist. Made the comment that he wished he could ask people about their Christianity in an interview so that he could only hire devout Christians. And then proceeded to bully those he did not consider Christian enough by intentionally leaving them off meetings, emails, invites for lunches and other after work events. For over two years. He only got the job because so many were laid off or took a voluntary separation at their 14th attempt to get the company on its feet. Which they still haven't.

Pros

The company is involved in some pretty interesting research. The scientists and engineers that are on board are extremely intelligent and qualified and a lot of the work they do is cutting edge.

Cons

Management in general operates in a panic-reactionary mode. Battelle has a long history of promoting scientists to management levels as the next step in their "career" without the requisite for management capabilities- leading to less than capable managment. To add to this, there has been no clear management strategy in recent years. I've been at Battelle for just over 6 years. In that time, we've had 3 re-organizations, 2 CEOs, 3 CFOs, 3 layoffs, and countless changes in mid-level management. The current management group is working to create a leaner company and a business portfolio mirroring traditional defense contractors like Leidos. Management decisions are made in silos and then rolled out to the company without consideration of the day to day impact. Such changes have recently caused somewhat of an exodus of staff.
