Great Divide

Pros

the people on the floor who do the work. there are so many brilliant people who have been at Bazaarvoice who truly know how to run the company.

Cons

The growing anger and frustration based on management's lack of contribution to the success of Bazaarvoice. Management is the weak link-- the people on the floor have to carry the weight most of the time.

Pros

I learned more from working there than I have learned with any other company. I learned the good, the bad, the ugly and how to work within the system. I worked with the smartest and the best of the best...no doubt about that. I agree with most of what has been posted below. Brilliant people, good option plan (specially for the earlier hires) and decent benefits.

Cons

They used to have the highest standard of hiring but as the company grew...the standard has dropped. Not sure what the executives are thinking...but the hiring standards and quotas are a bit wobbly. The teams are suffering and without a set vacation policy (to escape) or better middle management (than can step up while you are out) it will not get better. If you are young and get hired out of school...you will love the company because you won't know any better. If you are more senior and understand how life works, it will irritate the hell out of you because you probably have more experience than your boss. If you have a family or a life outside of BV...I'm sorry...family used to come first, but now it is expected that Bazaarvoice comes first and your family and outside life is second. Work life balance is exactly what you hear below, it is non existent unless you are in a management role or higher. In regards to the AMS article about the No Vacation policy: It was a fluff piece and it failed to mention that they ARE hiring a younger...hungrier group of people that have the promise of exotic trips, more stocks, and money waved in their faces as rewards for over achieving. That's great...but in a culture that breeds that type of person without a set vacation policy in place it leads to being a workaholic. Most people when they start at BV don’t start out as workaholics…BV trains them to be that way. People are terrified to take time off…the fear of losing their jobs, not getting that extra money (BV doesn’t offer the highest paid salaries), not being part of the team…AND worrying that their unqualified managers just might step in to help and actually make things worse.

Good, but not the best

Pros

My first two quarters with the company were blissful and fun. Being part of the sales team at a sales-driven organization was fun, and the work-life balance for this team was exactly what it needed to be. Small perks like team off-sites, "personal wellness" funds, video games in the office and quarterly All Hands meetings at the Alamo made work easy and enjoyable. There was a general sense of camaraderie amongst the worker bees and before the addition of excessive layers of middle-management and C level executives, even Exec's and Management seemed accessible and open to feedback.

Cons

I quickly learned that the "unlimited vacation" policy really only applied to the Sales team and the Executives, and even for Sales, taking time off was only acceptable when quota was being hit. Many of my friends worked for other teams within the organization, and it was disappointing and disheartening to learn that many were working (and still do work) 12+ hour days. The Quarterly exercise of Management Feedback Surveys seemed to be more of a show than a true exercise in giving employees a voice. In my experience, the feedback fell on deaf ears and I often wondered if the comments were even being read. Advancement only seems to be made available to favorites. The result has been a series of promotions to under-qualified, inexperienced sales people. Brash decisions are often made that impact the daily lives of employees. The result typically being a series of subsequent, rapid-fire decisions being made to compensate for (what many would call) the original "mistake". The company likes to tout a high-retention rate, but I watched many top performers leave of their own volition and that trend seems to have continued even after my departure.
