Pros

Family atmosphere, great coworkers Good Benefits Promotion from within

Cons

HR is a joke. Impossible to fire an employee that is not performing to even the lowest standards. Jump through all necessary hoops and still don't get the backing you need. Belk conducts associate surveys and claims to care about associates and managers. Very little of the feedback is acted on. Associates are given lip service for in store issues, especially if the store manager is the problem. Retail schedules are brutal (many people don't realize how many hours are actually worked by management)

Pros

Store discounts! Gratis from vendor. Fellow employees.

Cons

Mgmt does not know how to treat employees properly. Tends to have the attitude "just be glad you even have this job". And this is for everyone: part time just started and long time full time employees. Doesn't matter how good you are with the job assigned, you will be ostracized if you do not pressure customers into signing up for a Belk Reward Card(credit card). Belk makes more money on interest on credit card balances/interest than they do selling product!!! And they let their employees know that. There is a quota involved. Terrible at understanding people have certain personal times they must take off. They will not even allow employees to switch schedules for this reason. Threatened to terminate an employee for attending a funeral visitation for her grandfather. She worked and cried all during her shift instead of being with her family. Shortly afterward, a mgmt employee took off an entire week when her grandmother died. All employees were asked to pray for her and her family for their loss. Even encouraged to attend that funeral. That is the difference in staff and mgmt. During slow time, employees threatened with termination if they came in 5 minutes late or called in to not work their shift(no matter the reason). This was a good way to cut down employee cost during slow time. I would not recommend this company to anyone. They will drain all self esteem.
