Pros

Pads a resume. Campus is attractive. A strangely large number of good-looking people work here.

Cons

You will be underpaid, often by tens of thousands of dollars. That's been true for the life of the company though. They used to make the excuse you were getting stock grants, but 100 shares of a $50 stock is only five grand. Plus the stock is down to $12 now. There are no opportunities for career growth. When someone leaves they're generally replaced by an external hire. Any promotions that do occur happen entirely under the table to intentionally avoid the internal hiring and interview process. This is not hearsay; I personally witnessed at least two instances of the weekend calls that led to promotions quietly sliding through the usual months-long process by that Monday. Meanwhile, if you aren't friends with the right people, your own attempts to apply and transfer internally "by the rules" will be slow-walked or quietly killed by management. I know of two cases of people under the same director where internal transfer offer letters "disappeared" - and I was one of them. HR never investigated. Expect plenty of bait-and-switch "opportunities" to string you out in your current position, though. The executive suite is a revolving door of people smarter than me who show up to get a C-level position on their resume and then transfer to somewhere less dysfunctional. The CEO currently listed on the Glassdoor page, Steve Swad, served for less than a year. I forget the name of the current one. There's never been a CFO beyond the first one who stayed for longer than 18 months. There is CONSTANT organizational chaos. Expect leaders of entire divisions who have been at the company for over a decade to quit out of the blue, throwing the entire division into months of uncertainty. If the chaos subsides for too long, leadership will create more with a meaningless re-organization or new initiative we all have to follow, right now. I personally changed seats three times over one year because the CEO at the time (Ray, he was two CEOs ago) thought seating arrangements could increase productivity. Productivity crumbled as everyone constantly felt disrupted and never settled. Meanwhile everyone grew more and more cynical over the flailing attempts to prevent the company's steady decline. Since everyone is mostly still remote, there is no good reason to work for Benefitfocus unless they're offering you a title WAY beyond your current position. In which case, follow the CFOs' leads and play along for a year and a half so you can go be a whatever your spiffy title is at a place that doesn't pay like you're a college grad in 2008. Avoid. This. Place. PS: There also is no "culture." Covid killed most company cultures, but Benefitfocus's had been dead for years before that. It's not really anyone's fault - all those college grads BF hired either moved on or grew up, got married, had kids, and otherwise pumped the brakes on the partying and sex. The dogs in the office and tired cowbell meme from that one episode of SNL back in 2000 isn't the culture that people like to lament, it's the fact the place used to be packed with horny college kids.

Pros

It is fairly easy to get a job here. If you are looking for experience from a larger organization to then take with you to other employees, give it a go. There is a good chance it will be sold soon, so perhaps another reorg/leadership team will have go at it.

Cons

Expectations. The main issue here is that everything is on fire at any given time so management hires a ton of people to put out the fire without every properly communicating long term expectations. They have zero direction with your individual career growth. No worries, they will throw a number after your title to make you feel like you are moving up the ranks. All it truly will mean is that you are getting more volume of work. Pay attention to what you are learning and having to manage (well outside of your current role) and write down on your resume!!

Pros

Decent benefits package Bring dogs to work Free Coffee Work from home can be an option depending on role/manager

Cons

This company simply has no sense of direction or how to manage itself. Over the last couple years I have seen countless leadership changes and reorganizations. I honestly believe that this company thinks that it can fix all its internal issues simply by reorganizing and moving peoples desks around. This fixes nothing but only causes more confusion as people have to relearn who is in charge of what and what team works on what. There are many employees who have the "thats not my job!" attitude. New employees are often left clueless as their is no actual position training unless you are lucky enough to be on a team that provides power points from 2010. (Don't even bother reading these) The Benefitfocus University training almost seems like a propaganda class that makes you learn all the great things about the company and its leaders. This lasts an entire week! This time should be utilized on developing skills that pertain to ones actual role. How this company is still in business is honestly mind blowing. Deadlines are almost never met for clients. This is frankly due to poor leadership and management unwilling to set standards with carriers/clients and stick with it.
