Great place to build a career

Pros

If you have a strong work ethic and always want to be challenged, this is a great environment. This company is very selective about who they hire so it would not be accurate to say if someone is lazy that they do not last long -- because the right people tend to be hired in the first place. Berkshire is also in a growth mode where we continue to acquire high end Class A properties, which presents a lot of opportunity for growth and advancement as well. You do have to respect the chain of command here, just as with anywhere -- but senior management is very approachable, mutually respectful and open to feedback. Property Managers also attend an internal Annual Leadership conference in Florida -- it's something everyone looks forward to every year. It's not your typical, cliched corporate conference where everyone is going through the motions and wishes they were somewhere else -- everyone leaves every year feeling appreciated and like we're one family as a company. Anonymous employee surveys are issued every year -- management encourages 100% participation and listens to the feedback. On more than one occasion, I have actually seen survey feedback I have had translated into company policy -- I have never worked for a company, especially of this size, who is so responsive to employee feedback.

Cons

The hours can be long but everyone is treated well and work-life balance is also encouraged. In their own way, management does little things to show that you're appreciated or to encourage work-life balance if you've been working long hours. There is a structured career path on the property management side, less so on the corporate side -- but immense improvements have been made in the last year to create career paths and improve professional development for corporate employees.

Amazing company to work for

Pros

I have worked for Berkshire Communities for 10 years and have enjoyed every bit of it. Berkshire is more than a company...it's a family! They have given me the opportunity to grow from a Maintenance Technician upon hiring, to now being a Property Manager for over the past 3 years. Berkshire gives you the tools, support and opportunity to grow from within and they definitely recognize dedication and hard work. I am truly grateful for the opportunities I have been given and cannot see myself anywhere else than here.

Cons

None to speak of. I hope Berkshire continues to grow on the acquisition front to allow more growth.

Excellent Training

Pros

I have been in the property management industry for 10 years. With that said, I have never worked for a company that not only invests time and training into their employees but genuinely cares about them as well. The training is phenomenal, there is also regional support for each region that you can contact with any questions after training. I'm fairly new to the company but have only heard excellent things from previous and current employees. It feels great to be at a property that has great ownership and regional staff. I would strongly recommend Berkshire to any of my friends in the industry.

Cons

The benefits are a bit costly for open network coverage. However, the compensation is very fair so that makes up for it.
