Pros

The discount is the best reason to work at Best Buy. Also co-workers usually make the job enjoyable. There are a lot of younger people working the stores, so there can be a lot of High-School-like drama. It is also a great place to learn about new technologies. It's also satisfying when you know that you truely helped a customer solve a problem.

Cons

The pay is poor and it is difficult to get a raise. I started with a low salary of $7 / hr. I received high marks on my annual reviews, but the raises where always very low, and after 4 years, new hires were getting paid more than me for doing the same job that I have mastered. One of my biggest problems is Best Buy is the pressure given by management to upsell, attach, and sell service plans. I really like to help customers and get them what they need. I take care of them the best that can, making them truely happy with their purchases. I feel guilty up-selling them to something that I know they don't need. I always asked lifestyle questions, mentioned the services that Best Buy offers, and made recommendations that fit, but I will not pressure and manipulate people into thinking that they NEED something that they don't. By truely taking care of the customer, I know that they will come back and buy again from me. It takes someone with a broken moral compass to really make management happy Best Buy.

Pros

The company embraces work-life balance -- affording employees, to a degree, to wrap work around their life schedule more easily, as opposed to having their life schedule be completely dictated by work. This balance empowers employees to more efficiently manage their schedule and work more easily when it works for them -- hence driving retention. The people at the company are top-notch. The environment is very fast and fun. Senior leadership at Best Buy is nothing short of impressive; they consistently make really good decisions and always do right by the company and by the employees. There is a lot of respect in the building -- for leadership as well as amongst peers. It's also a relatively "flat"-feeling organization; while there are layers and levels, it doesn't 'feel' that way; middle-management levels comingling with VP or above levels on a daily basis is not unheard of.

Cons

The company seems to change -- direction, shift, expand, re-direct -- on what seems like a daily basis. This can seem chaotic and frustrating (but if they didn't change/evolve, they'd likely be dead by now, so it's a good thing). As a result, you must be able to embrace change to be a happy employee there. There is very much an "Fire! Shoot! Aim!" approach to most of the work and people run before they walk often, which does create process gaps and wasted effort and money.

Pros

I would recommend BBY for people in school who want to learn a little about business, execution of strategies, and have no desire to advance unless they are female.

Cons

Common sense is in short supply. Don't look for leadership from the general managers. While not totally at fault they are not connected or engaged in the stores. Most of the GMs are off on Sundays and Mondays with district meetings several times per month. As a result of the dis-connect they often play the role of "albatross managers" by flying into the stores, dumping, collecting a paycheck then taking off again. With respect to senior level management the decision to inflate Geek Squad numbers to Wall Street by inboarding is a short-term answer to current economic environment and only forcing additional erosion of precious gross margin dollars. One of the BBY values of "Grow through challenge and change" is grossly over-utilized for the sake of show changes on a score card. The addition of new tool kit on the intranet is a classic example of change for the sake of change as opposed to change for growth.
