It's All You

Pros

It's work from home, coffee shop, trailer park, whatever you want. As a publisher you own your success, or lack of it. They offer tons of support but everything is turned back to your effort. The product you end up selling is really well done, if you can get it into print. If you are a relentless sales hack, this is probably the place for you to be because for that person it doesn't matter what they are selling and this is probably one of the easiest products to sell.

Cons

It's a strange place, everybody is all smiles all the time. Endless text messages encouraging you to get out there and sell, sell, sell!!! (This job taught me about the left swipe.) Endless conference calls you are expected to be on where the company stars talk about their struggles and how they overcame them and now they are rich, rich, rich!! Your day is pretty much cold calling small businesses and being exposed to their wrath. The reality is I think about 40% of the people that take this on get to the point where they are selling a printed product that is being distributed. At that point you still are not making much, and it can take months to really start making money. The people who succed in this company are those who came from other jobs where they were relentlessly cold calling. Think Cutco Knife Sales Guy, Yellow Page Ads Sales Guy, Life Insurance Sales Guy, Used Car Sales Guy. If you're one of these types, this is probably a gold mine. I guess it's better than Mary Kay?

Pros

You do all the hard work for very little pay. I would guess about 2-5% of people who do this job make any real money. The rest lose a LOT of money trying to get it off the ground while working for free. No benefits ever with one of the 'fastest growing companies in America.' Terrible ethics when it comes down to it.

Cons

It is dressed up like advertisers love this product. They don't. And magazine is not sent to every household in the neighborhood. Very hard sell in real time and the company takes most of the money. 'Baseline' is not a real number. Don't take my word for it, talk to real publishers in the industry first. They'll tell you this is not a real publisher role. Sure does sound good though.

Pros

Sales! Commissions! You too can deceive a company into buying an poorly managed magazine with a long term con of a contract!

Cons

People will not favor you for what product is REALLY offered.
