Pros

The recruiting team does a great job at hiring people who are smart, willing to help, and are aligned to the mission. I’ve met some great people that I would call friends. Net Promoter Score is impressive and we have some customers who’ve been hired which is a positive sign that we can deliver value. One of the perks of being an employee (and my partner benefits too) is having unlimited access to a coach, as well as the freedom to work remotely without any pressure to be in an office. This flexibility aligns well with my family responsibilities. This job is pushing me in unexpected ways- both good and bad. You have to have thick skin and a lot of patience for the constant revolving door of change if you’ve never been at a start up.

Cons

The execs are a case study of what not to do to scale a company. A business school will have fun analyzing where we went wrong. It’s a red flag that at this stage of growth we put random leaders into important roles like product, marketing, or sales. For example, the Chief of staff of the founder is currently managing the global sales team. The reality is that as a quota carrier, you are just a number, and there is no acknowledgement of how unpredictable the market is. No AE has repeated success, no matter how much effort you put in. It shouldn’t be this hard. In the last few weeks there have been a list of resignations, and it might get worse since one of the most admired female leaders announced that she is leaving the company. The current approach is all about “high performance”, which is code for leaders being forced by HR to put people on PIPs or quietly let them go. I lost count on how many people we fired last year this way. Just sad that our culture is where it is today.

Pros

Some great co-workers (the ones with integrity); competitive salary

Cons

Wow. If you read any of the interviews under 3 stars here, that should give you an accurate picture. Many of us were silo’d (in fear) and was refreshed to see that there was more commonalities in this horrific and toxic work environment than I realized, simply by reading these reviews. Someday, this will be an organizational case study on how an organization slowly evolved and festered into a mirror of the narcissistic CEO that oversees it. There is a Stephen Covey description of the ‘character’ vs ‘personality’ ethic. Look that up. This organization is squarely on the wrong side of that. I mean, Jeezus - having new employees post Glassdoor reviews with the first few weeks? Really?! I think I read another review here - if you stripped those away, this org would be well under 3 stars. And unfortunately 90% of the people I work with here who actually ‘thrive’ are themselves at some level of psychopathology or trauma-bonded. What’s even sicker is many here are actually psychologists that see it all but do nothing. There are a few other standouts here that seem like poster children. It’s nauseous. The best (meaning high integrity, highly effective and just plain solid human beings) employees left or were managed out (and yes, HR, people were very aware of your tactics) in early 2022 it seemed. It would be one thing if this was truly an organization just going through ‘transitions’ - it is not. It is sick AF. (((HR - don’t even bother responding to this. Your canned answers and deflection are so transparently sick, don’t even bother, please. Y’all need to cure the coward bug running through your department))) Stay away, unless you have a really great mental health coach to help bail the water out of this sinking, sick, festering ship. Don’t. Just don’t.

Pros

Alexi knows how to bring in big-name celebrity talent. Uplift is an amazing event focused on bringing out the best in mindsets and behaviors to help people build lives with purpose and passion. The company was full of brilliant people, building things that lead to better lives for members who used their products. The coaches by and large are a lovely, caring, and effective community. BetterUp Manage and Lead are an excellent products. For now.

Cons

Culture comes from the top. The culture here is fear driven. The CEO shows zero care or concern for the wellness or sanity of his employees. People are constantly pressured into accepting unrealistic deadlines that cannot be met even with long-hours, nights and weekends, and then reprimanded when they cannot hit those deadlines. At the same time, roadmaps and reorgs happen on repeat, at a faster rate than I've seen anywhere in tech. As others have expressed, they expect a cultish level of obedience. When smart people point out areas of improvement or places that need more consideration, they should be very wary of whether it supports or challenges the CEO's perspective in any way. I watched those who provided valuable insights and brave honesty be managed out for "being difficult" and "not getting what we are trying to do here" instead of being rewarded for making the culture and the products better. They are bleeding talent right and left because they know how to hire talent, but not how to utilize it.
