Best startup I’ve worked at – important work, great people, and actual work-life balance
Pros
I’ve been at BetterUp for over 3 years now, and honestly, it’s the best tech startup I’ve been part of. And my whole career has been in startups. The work is meaningful and mission-driven. You’re not just pushing pixels or chasing vanity metrics...you’re building something that helps people live better lives, and that really motivates me. The culture is one of the most genuine I’ve seen. People here actually care. They care about the mission, about the product, and about each other. Leadership really walks the talk. This isn’t just a values poster on the wall. Also, the work-life balance is shockingly good for a startup. I’ve seen reviews saying otherwise and have no idea what company those people were working at before. This is the first startup I’ve been at where I don’t feel like I need to be online 24/7. People respect boundaries, and weekends are usually chill.
Cons
I think we hired too fast during COVID and brought on a lot of folks who came from bigger, slower orgs—and it showed. Not everyone understood what startup pace means or what high performance looks like. That led to some drag on momentum and the culture. The pace can be intense. It’s not for everyone. But if you’re the kind of person who thrives on building fast and solving hard problems with smart people, you’ll love it here.
