Pros

Incredibly Talented co-workers who are great people.

Cons

The most dysfunctional sales organization I've ever worked for - Which is a shame because the people and the product are really great. The executive team has made sweeping changes to the company and the sales organization in the last 6 months and has left the sales team out to dry. Updates and changes come quickly, often with little explanation. Time is not provided to allow these changes to take effect and many salespeople are either let go or leave because the conditions are so poor. Even new hires who are still ramping up are being let go. The internal workings of the sales organization are in terrible disarray. Business development and marketing support are non-existent. Any inbounds that do come in are routed based on SDR preferences instead of an organized and equitable system. The executive leadership uses the mission and the culture at the company to gaslight its own employees and create a miserable working environment. For a company whose mission is to help people live better lives, I was shocked to learn the number of breakdowns not only among the sales team and throughout the company. I strongly advise anyone who is considering employment at BetterUp to consider looking somewhere else.

Pros

Some really amazing talent at this organization. The coaching is great. Which is a good thing because your coach might be the only person who keeps you sane.

Cons

Mind f+ck. Total disaster. Toxic. Toxic. Toxic. If you want to work somewhere they promise you growth, personal and professional development, “clarity, purpose and passion” but mean none of those things then this is the place for you. Women, pay special attention, the founders will add you to the website (because they want more women on the website) but you will be a pawn in their game. Do not work here. The founders hire people with experience and discredit that experience because it lacks a level of “craftsmanship”. There is a reason successful companies succeed and start-ups scale. But this company believes they can and should do everything in a different and unique way that will have you inventing and reinventing things over and over again. Nothing is ever good enough. Salespeople, please do not work here. There is no respect for your role. The general belief is that the product is so good it should sell itself. And it’s always “wartime” so you’ll need to work the hardest you’ve ever worked in your career.

Pros

Amazing team members, great manager. Other cross-functional partners that work with my organization are also fantastic. The best part about BetterUp are the people that work here. Everyone is super smart, empathetic, gritty, and ready to work hard. The benefits are great : fully remote, unlimited PTO, fully paid medical benefits, two company wide weeks off per year (July 4 and Christmas week, in addition to whatever PTO you take), and home office setup reimbursements / lifestyle funding.

Cons

I had really high hopes when I started working here because of the culture that was emphasized during my interview process. First, the interview process needs to be streamlined. It took two months to interview and get hired. Second, don't tell people during the recruiting process that you have merit increases, cost of living increases, and give fair market value in pay. That's a bold faced lie. There have not been merit increases in over a year according to people that have worked here longer than I. It's simply just a lie to get people in the door that way. Why trick people into coming here? There are senior leaders on ELT that make hundreds of thousands of dollars who cannot even manage their time properly to make it to meetings. There are senior leaders on ELT who talk down to people in their organizations and threaten PIPs or firing if they are challenged in any way. BU is very toxic in the way they shove their high impact values down your throat, but don't practice them on their own. Be careful who you express your discomfort to or you might be on the chopping block for the next round of layoffs. Our team was cut SIGNIFICANTLY in the August layoffs and those left were forced to take on double the work for no additional compensation. This shows me that there is a lack of understanding around how hard people are working and how burnt out people already are. It shows me that senior leadership does not care about their employees. Nothing stays the same and everything is always changing which basically creates more work. It's the exact opposite of the high impact value of 'do less, deliver more'. If I didn't love the flexibility of working remotely, I would leave this company immediately.
