Pros

Great benefits, including strong equity packages if you can stick it out. You can have good experiences here IF you are on the right team, which may be a gamble.

Cons

Some of the leadership (middle management) is questionable. Some are not qualified, and it can definitely raise an eyebrow! Lots of gaslighting within the people team, they don't listen to people's concerns - even when there is a really good reason to listen. The HR practices aren't in support of employees, they definitely need some help with it comes to employee relations. My experience at Block was the worst I've ever had in my long career. This was because of the team, and how HR chose to respond to the issues. There are other teams that had supportive, genuinely thoughtful, and experienced leadership. But many that done. Managers aren't trained well, they lack empathy, - actually, empathy seemed like a weakness to the leader I worked under. It was so disappointing to see this. It was oppressive, and others left this team as well. This definitely wasn't a fit for me at all. Again, not a reflection of Block as a whole, but be CAREFUL and REALLY use discernment. Please do your due diligence before deciding what team you want to be on (especially in The Talent Org). Otherwise, you're rolling the dice.

Pros

Fully distributed workforce allows for employees to work from anywhere. Benefits are ok. Stock vesting happens on a quarterly basis.

Cons

The lack of a coherent strategic framework creates a lot of internal chaos. The only aspirational company goal seems to be to increase complexity for their customers and their employees. Leadership is non-existent with a management philosophy that revolves entirely around the power of authority. Zero work-life balance (all work, no life). If you're 100% about the paycheck (and nothing else) then this place is for you.

Pros

The pay is competitive, the benefits are well out together, and the office culture is inclusive (despite the fact that the responsibility of building office culture is always punted to the employees all the way at the bottom of the ladder). These bread and circuses are nice distractions from the completely unfeeling, unempathetic underbelly of this corporate beast.

Cons

Don’t be fooled, a company as ungrateful as this has absolutely zero issues pushing you through the metaphorical meat grinder time and time again, getting your best work out of you, and then coldly kicking you to the curb without a thank you. Very few leads are actually supervised when it comes to interacting with their team members one-on-one; as someone who was subjected to cold, impatient interactions with leads time and time again, it really calls into question this company’s ability to discern between truly good people and ruthless cutthroats who will make them the most money. On top of that, I can’t tell you how many times I heard pithy buzzwords being thrown around like “growth mindset” and “honest, open communication” but then witnessed peers and leads making choices in the opposite direction. Unfortunately, retaliation is very real, and pointing out issues like these will result in secret investigations done behind the scenes where everything you’ve ever done on company property (digital and physical) will be scrutinized to oblivion. This is not a company that will protect you, your peace, or your life. They will siphon your talents until you’re dry, and fire you without even giving you an opportunity to speak. Block? More like block this company from leeching off of humanity.
