Pros

Flexibility, remote/telecommuting opportunity when it makes semse

Cons

Middle management tier (Manager to Senior Director) weak across the company. Promotions into those position appear to be based nearly solely on loyalty vs. competence Micro-management is rampant, so many time wasters and box checkers for no meaningful ROI Fear-based culture, employees are not empowered, not valued, not trusted

Pros

Salary OK for the industry. Some very hopeful new management, who are trying to regain momentum on being a Great Place to Work.

Cons

BSC is a Healthcare Insurance company trying to become IT company that also does Healthcare Insurance. It is not working. The 8+ year Facets roll out is a good example. Stay focused on what you do best and outsource the rest. Remember when you do outsource to actually trust your consultants. Too much turn over in Sr., Director, VP and C-Level Management, ill thought-out reorgs, and layoffs depleted moral and made working relationships difficult. The leftovers are mostly “just happy to have a job" and that attitude has led to fear based decision making. Not healthy. Not a Great Place to Work -- right now.

Roll the Dice...

Pros

Pay is good, benefits are average (except for the pension, which they no longer offer to new employees). The company mission, vision, and values that the top leadership sends out sound great and are followed by many employees in the company.

Cons

You will be rolling the dice when considering this employer. You might get lucky or you might spend a few years in a very toxic environment. Recommend you find an employer that has a higher bar for their middle management. While most of the top leadership seem to be aligned in pointing the company in a good direction, the gulf between the VPs and the Directors/Managers allows the latter to effectively run the company. This results in some groups having great experiences and others having very toxic and detrimental experiences. Blue Shield Values are not practiced by many Directors/Managers, and since the HR department is the weakest I have ever seen, no one is held accountable for their negative actions, forcing good talent to find a better company.
