Pros

They used to have a respected management team.

Cons

Their HR Team will side with management on each and every situation. I had to walk away from my 8 yrs of employment with them because a new manager wanted a new team under them. After several failed attempts to try to have HR listen to my.side (and 8 yrs of excellent reviews from the prior manager before they left), HR sided with the new manager. 3 months after walking away, I received a call that they terminated that manager. By then I had found another job. Very pathetic. They lost a dedicated team member and many others due to poor leadership. Do not choose to work for them, as it will be a huge waste of your time.

Pros

Good work/life balance. They recently stopped the pension, but when I worked there, the pay+401K matching+pension made for a generous pay package. Smart telecommuting policy. Good people, smart and caring

Cons

Decades of underinvestment in IT has left BSC unable to compete. Culture is to talk about working, but not actually accomplish anything Despite the huge challenges, BSC moved from inertia to outright blocking of much-needed innovation. Nobody takes responsibility. Without clear owners and accountability, everyone wrings their hands and wishes BSC was better, but nothing changes. The legal and procurement departments are the WORST. They set up ludicrous, unattainable hurdles, preventing BSC from getting competitive bids from vendors. BSC has terrible customer service. BSC wants to compete by having excellent customer service. Problem is that they don't have a plan to improve customer service. They do have lots of "strategy sessions" where they talk about how awesome it will be when BSC has great customer service.

Pros

On-site gym, flexible work schedules. Many departments have hoteling, which can be a con but I think it's great.

Cons

In the ten months I've been with Blue Shield, eight people in my department have been terminated. Most of these people had been with the company for only a few months. I think the problem is that hiring managers have no idea what they want. Unsuspecting candidates accept offers, but then find that their managers are incompetent and have no desire to mentor or to train. The company makes it easier and more attractive for managers to fire than to actually "manage" or "train." Laziness is rampant among managers and directors. As long as they are "in" with the right people, they need to only pretend to work by appearing "busy." Be very careful when considering an offer from Blue Shield.
