Pros

The "people" want to do a good job Middle management tries hard to create a good work environment The 2006 roll-out of the "new" Blue Shield logo was a great success

Cons

Not rewarded for taking risks/punished for thinking independently and making decisions Poor senior leaderhsip/no visionaries Wearing people out - no work-life balance for managers and above Spending too much money for system upgrades that ultimately won't improve speed/quality Strategic Plan is a joke...

Pros

Located close to public transportation Located close to the Ferry Building Good internal communications Lots of lunch spot options

Cons

Extremely siloed work culture. Lack of collaboration. Everyone only has their own departmental view and doesn't want to step out of their narrow perspective to get the job done. Very reactive environment, lack of planning Employee opinions may be sought, but don't have much weight Lots of offices throughout California. Most communications done through the phone and email

Pros

Has a good foundation that supports both beneficial and at times cutting edge projects. May not be as cut-throat as other insurers, since it remains not-for-profit. At times, you can have the opportunity to expand the scope of your work, thereby making it more interesting, if you are so inclined, and have the skill set to do so. But you need to identify such opportunities yourself, and be your own advocate to engage in such work.

Cons

Merit increases fare very low. Penny pinching on almost everything, including appropriate tools to get the job done. Way behind the curve on moving vast stores of data out and converting to information usable at enterprise leve. ; however sense is that this is not much better, nor worse than majority of health insurers, with exception of 1-2 leaders.
