Pros

If you want to learn about the health care space, this is a great place to start Some smart people Lots of opportunities to learn They are a not-for-profit and have a foundation, which makes them a better place to work than other big insurance companies

Cons

Lots of bureaucracy and politics Slow moving High performers are not rewarded and leave frustrated Low to medium performers can stay under the radar and work there for decades or even get promoted above high performing peers Decisions by committee Individuals not empowered to do their jobs or suggest better ways of doing things

Pros

If you work in Marketing, your target market will be likely be one of four distinct groups: Individual & Family, Small Business, Mid-size to Large-size Business (aka Mid-Large Group), and the broker community that serves Individual & Family and Small Business clients. The targets are distinct, and your role will be clear.

Cons

Blue Shield of California can be very reactive in its product and other strategies. The company makes many decisions based on what its competitors are doing, and is not as strategic and thoughtful about what it can do to become number one in its marketplace. The reactive churn (always playing catch up) can be a downer.

Pros

Company is ver slow pace Good for family life, particularly if you have young children Good if you have a second career/side business Good if you just want to get by and not care about career growth

Cons

Middle level managers are terrible at managing their people and very bad at communications, a key factor in success Incompetent, not well trained managers who are too caught up in the weeds and unsure how to delegate work Unskilled co-workers in some departments Many processes that prevent timely actions and innovation Company has many redundancies Lack of good communications from top to bottom, bad at keeping employees informed and engaged.
