Pros

Great central downtown location for those commuting by train. Good work/life balance insofar as nobody is expected to work excessive hours (thought the stress of the job will almost certainly go home with you every day). Very nice coworkers who try to boost morale, at least while they're still with the company.

Cons

I can't speak for the rest of Brady but the division based in Chicago is suffering from poor business strategy that is way above most employees' pay grades. The steps management has taken to remedy it include strategic refocus, change at the top and rounds of layoffs. What's left is a skeleton crew compared to where they were a year ago. As motivated as the rank-and-file is to do what they can, there is a palpable sense of dread and hopelessness that makes the office feel more like a wake than a productive place of business. Turnover is embarrassing, as employees leave in droves while those who remain have one foot out the door mentally. And who can blame them? There is nothing about how the company does business that inspires confidence in their jobs. But perhaps the most demoralizing development is the officewide tendency for those in management to micromanage. Refusal to trust direct reports, obsessive hours-watching, undermining good work. These are just a few of the ways managers treat professionals like children. The only thing employees learn anymore is how their colleagues deal with stress--and it's never good. And to add insult to injury, the compensation is not competitive with the job market in its location. It never was, but now that employees are expected to carry the burden of those who have left of been laid off, the compensation standards are almost insulting. At this point, a position here can only be attractive to those at the very beginning or very end of their careers. Nobody with any hopes of stability should give it to a company that can't expect to give it back.

Pros

The location is pretty good.

Cons

Unfortunately, management doesn’t care about helping employees advance. They seem oblivious to the problems and unhappiness of the office. When there was a restructure, all new upper management came in and didn’t even talk to anyone. They monitored from behind their closed doors and created an environment filled with bitter employees. Sadly, the office culture has turned into talk of interviews and new job prospects. Managers stifle the creativity and ambition of employees by micromanaging and only looking out for themselves.

Worst management I've ever encountered

Pros

None. Nada. Nil. Zip. Zilch.

Cons

The so called "management" in this organization is the epitome of everything that is wrong with corporate America. Unskilled, untalented, uninvolved "leaders" whose apparent only purpose is to drain the company like parasites and then move on to their next target. The most blatant example of cronyism and nepotism I've ever seen, the upper & middle management certainly did not earn their positions through brains, hard work, or passion & knowledge of the industry which BRADY is in. They only care about the daily numbers, they breathlessly await each day's earnings report the way a gambling addict is obsessed with nightly lottery numbers. They have zero long term vision or innovative plans. The subsidiary companies which BRADY owns around the country are in ruins. The Buffalo plant is a wreck, and they've virtually destroyed the long-standing SETON in New Haven, Connecticut. There is also a shocking lack of diversity in the company - if you aren't an upper middle class white male with a fancy degree and the right connections, then you are treated as a third class citizen who only exists to work hard to enrich the shareholders. No growth or opportunity to be had for the little people. (I would rate this place a Zero except that Glassdoor doesn't allow less than one star for some reason).
