Pros

Working for Cal Poly is very enjoyable if you're looking for long-term career stability, work-life balance, and a chance to keep learning and polishing your skills as you work. Coworkers are generally friendly and respectful, and honest feedback and communication is encouraged. Lots of projects involve research and development into impact on the campus so you need to be self-motivated to learn new skill sets.

Cons

As a state university, promotions are infrequent and salary is not as competitive compared to the rest of the industry, which is an expected trade-off.

Pros

Lecturing, teaching and mentoring students.

Cons

As a contract lecturer you will NEVER get three quarters in a row. This means if teaching is your passion, you will be trying to live on a poverty wage in SLO, which is impossible. I thought that my 30 years of corporate experience and 20 years of teaching would have some value to the university. So then I thought I'd try to get on as staff and then teaching in the evenings. No way, almost all job postings have already been assigned to internal staff or "favorites." If you are lucky to get a rushed 1/2 hour interview, they are just filling their quota.
