Pros

The students are great and I love to help them. They are thirsty for knowledge and support, so many of whom lack the resources and moral support at home to make them successful in higher education.

Cons

No one seems to want to be there. So many students wish they were anywhere but Cal State LA, faculty have chips on their shoulders about working there, and staff are not in the least interested in developing their skills and knowledge. And why should they? The University does absolutely nothing to invest in or encourage staff professional development. It's embarrassing the types of workshops and seminars that pass as "professional development." And of course, how can I not mention how HORRIFICALLY underpaid the staff are? Even Fresno State pays their staff better than Cal State LA. Needless to say, I'm looking to greener pastures.

Pros

Friendly staff, diverse environment, fair wages, a place to grow your skills. Laid back environment. Free fitness opportunities. Travel. Equipment provided for work.

Cons

Management rife with cronies and the hiring of friends. Old staffers won't retire though they are awful at their jobs. Entrenchment a problem. Union mismanaged and basically worthless. New president is starting to make serious changes!

Pay is Horrible

Pros

I love working here because no one really pays attention to what you're doing. As a lecturer, I could come and go any time, didn't have to attend in faculty meetings, or come in days you're not teaching. Autonomy is great!!

Cons

For the amount of education you need, the pay is pretty poor. No one wants to do more than their share. A few new buildings, but the rest of the campus is falling apart. Many of lecture halls are dilapidated, old, and worn. Quite depressing atmosphere. Faculty are not appreciated and are expected to give way more than they receive.
