Everything is a pro at CARFAX. I loved this job, the people are nice, helpful and want to exhibit team work within the whole organization. The benefits are fabulous, as well as all the other perks. I would recommend this place to work to anyone.

Pros

Smart and Friendly People - I was always given the tools and assistance that I needed to succeed as a Java developer. People were always willing to stop what they were doing to help answer my questions or work with me to solve a problem. Pair Programming and XP - CARFAX has been called the "home of XP" by several agile software development experts. It was an amazing environment to work in. Focused, but not overbearing. Encouraging and fair, but not accepting of repeated failure. Once a problem is identified, everyone works to resolve it. Internship Program - CARFAX has a great internship program that they use to cultivate potential employees. As a former intern turned successful developer, I can not speak highly enough of this program. The interns are placed on real teams and given real work to do almost immediately. The sink-or-swim factor is scary, but the teams are so great that you really have to try to fail. Equal Voices - CARFAX is a relatively flat organization. Because of this, it is commonplace for a developer to have a candid conversation with a director or product manager. Everyone is focused on making the product and the company better. It is refreshing to be a part of an environment with such a high level of transparency.

Cons

Lack of Product Innovation - CARFAX has become great at turning data into usable information. Through this concept, they pioneered the Vehicle History Report and some derivative products. Over the years, they have collected billions of records of data. This data has a lot of potential outside of just the VHR, but certain forces within the company have hindered CARFAX's use of this data to build other informational products. Non-Competitive Salaries - CARFAX cultivates some really talented people. At some point, however, the market reaches out to these people, and they realize that they have the potential to be making much more. As a result, some people leave after a time to explore more lucrative options. The opposite is also the case, however. Several developers have been so impressed by the environment at CARFAX that they have taken pay cuts in order to come work there.

Pros

If you are ever lucky enough to work for CARFAX you will count your blessings. It is one of the best companies out there to work for and most of the people you work with will blow your mind with their talent and passion. Innovation is generally encouraged and individuality is allowed to flourish and grow - you won't see cookie cutter people at CARFAX. The environment at CARFAX is second to none and work and fun go hand in hand. Salaries at CARFAX will be on the lower end but have gotten better over the years. Benefits on the other hand are very good and vacation time is generous. Despite the issues that will be listed in the Cons section, CARFAX continues to remain one of the best but it has some issues it needs to address.

Cons

Often time big issues overwhelm little issues and important processes are ignored in order to get a new product out the door sacrificing quality. CARFAX has grown to the point where there are some talent voids in positions. The company is very flat, do not expect to rapidly grow your career here. The taint of bureaucracy and fiefdoms have crept into the building and it sometimes can be hard to get anything done or get transparency into some departments. The company needs to do more to understand its new products and some of their issues as well as the way they integrate into the product as a whole. Sometimes it seems as though the company is so busy doing something new that it forgets about what it had been doing previously. Be ready to be told, "we are working on that" or "it will be fixed within..." when you bring up issues, and then don't hold your breath waiting for that to happen.
