A sinking ship

Pros

The culture and community are very strong. Coworkers are very smart and great to work with. There is a lot of potential for growth, and being promoted can happen in a matter of months. The management treat us to nice dinners at fancy restaurants.

Cons

There are very few projects and the work that does come in isn't challenging or engaging. Most people are typically unassigned and working on internal tools that never see the day of light. Nepotism is rampant so unfortunately the directors are under qualified and have poor leadership and management skills. There is zero transparency and mass firings can occur at the drop of a hat. Over the past year the company has fired more than 60% of workers. This has seriously impacted morale. They pay very low and there have been numerous mistruths about bonus payouts. Compensation is based on nepotism, not experience.

Pros

A willingness to hire people from non-conventional backgrounds makes for an energetic and social office culture. With work (and some luck) you can find opportunities to build your technical skills. Some talented and smart coworkers to learn from. A few interesting engineering and business challenges such as Pro Bono work. Room to propose new ideas in an evolving company. Politics/staffing has gotten less blatantly nepotistic over time. A newish HR representative is genuinely receptive to feedback and committed to being a fair arbiter (taking this role over from the current CEO). After a long rocky stretch, the company seems to be adapting. Newer hires are getting more guidance and room to specialize.

Cons

We were stuck in a disappointing sales rut last year. The sales team pursued any lead without a solid plan on what we had to offer, with foreseeable results. Solid helmsmanship on the emerging product side was especially lacking. Leadership underestimated the difficulty of the pivot. Bulk of analytix boils down to SQL aggregations, not far removed from vague assertions in Excel. Past work centered on tedious domains such as headcount reduction. An opinionated CEO prone to defensive outbursts and crude jokes that feel out of place in New York in 2019, though he tries to maintain friendships with employees. Miscommunication from leadership regarding benefits etc. hurt morale. (Misleading town halls were thankfully discontinued.) A troubling lack of oversight over toxic managers/teams (a small minority, to be fair) which seems to be getting addressed. Experiences could vary wildly depending on staffing. Many people who quit felt that they were stagnating due to a lack of impactful, well-defined work. A sometimes-harmful culture of insecurity/impostor syndrome, perhaps relating to a lack of experience outside of CKM. Seniors, even the most able, can be defensive, cliquish, or condescending in regard to technical questions.

Pros

With most of the staff in data science or engineering, there is a real sense of community here, in which people share similar interests and learn from each other. As others have mentioned, the company really encourages professional growth and collaboration, so there are ample opportunities to explore different aspects of data science and analytics. They also promote a company that is run by its employees, which allows you to influence what you think is important or exciting via the numerous committees they have set up. People are friendly and approachable, and you're really able to be yourself here. Overall, I think it's perfect for someone starting their career and especially for those that are interested in business and management. We have a really talented team, and really do provide a lot of value to our clients.

Cons

Things were shaky this year, as the company went through a reorg, becoming a corporation instead of an LLC, getting a name change, and investing a lot in product development - with many new engineering hires. The sales leadership they hired did not seem to work out, and as a result, there were few projects to keep people really busy. Due to all the changes, and general timing around bonuses, there were several departures, which had a big impact on morale. Most of the above has subsided, and there is a much better business outlook, but it had a lasting impact on the culture which we are still recovering from.
