Pros

CLA is ahead of the game with providing online training and information on tax changes. If you want to put your head down and work 60+ hrs a week you can learn quite a bit and get ahead. There are some really good people here with tons of experience and the firm has a diverse array of clients so you can really learn a lot.

Cons

CLA markets itself with the "CLA Promise" to help you build your brand and career but at the end of the day it's just another public accounting firm that is trying to do whatever they can to make money. There are some really great people working there, and there are others that will make your life absolutely miserable. Work-life balance doesn't exist. Like most other public accounting firms there is a drastic void at the manager level because staff accountants come in ready to learn but by the time they make senior, they are so frustrated or offered more money/better work-life balance elsewhere that they leave. Additionally, there is a giant disconnect between what senior management thinks can be done in a certain amount of time and what can actually be done in a certain amount of time. Add to this the juggle of learning on the job with little guidance or worse guidance from frustrated and condescending upper management and you have a perfect recipe for a bad experience.

Pros

Nice office, work does not seem as hectic as other big 4 firms. There are some... if very few people that brighten up your days.

Cons

Toxic environment. All partners/managers are very young and there is a toxic environment that makes you feel as if you are in high school all over again. Very little exposure to other audits (only state and local).... doesn't pave way for your future. Glad to say that I did not stay too long, but got the senior title and left to private . Turnover rate is huge here.. so if somebody leaves you are stuck with the pile of work they leave behind. Not a place I would recommend.

Pros

Pay and benefits are respectable

Cons

They claim they are not an "up or out" accounting firm, but they absolutely are. The environment is geared to young, aggressive upwardly mobile persons. An older, experienced employee who does not want to be a principle is a nuisance, in the way and needs to be driven out.
