Pros

Some of the people were nice and easy to work with.

Cons

A lot of the managers are incompetent. The training is not very good. Poor performers don't get fired, which causes performance issues for the department and demoralizes those who are capable and want to excel. The reputation of the company has deteriorated over the years and for good reason. There are better insurance companies out there. Please find another one.

Pros

Great Chicago location Decent benefits (but getting less good) On site fitness facility It's a job

Cons

Very top heavy hierarchy with no genuine leadership. CEO Motomed's expense "controls" focus on direct costs only and ignore indirect ones, such as outsourcing of IT and decentralization of Specialty Lines underwriting. First line management is generally knowledgeable but ineffective due to CYA mentality. There is no incentive to do more than the minimum. Employes are encouraged to "think outside the box" but penalties are huge for being wrong. There is no loyalty anywhere in this company.

Not much of a future in IT

Pros

Despite several tough years there is a determined effort to turn the company around. The new management is driving the staff pretty hard right now, but it's likely that this effort will show results in a few more years. CNA's combined ratio still remains stubbornly high. If you see that ratio come down in the near future then the company will likely recover.

Cons

Although the business side may have a future to look forward too there is nothing beyond the horizon for the information technology group. Recently 60% of IT was laid off to make room for outsourcing companies. Management has made it clear that the rest of IT will be slowly turned over to the outsourcing companies. There is plenty of work here only no Americans need apply for it. It is also clear that IT is considered an annoying cost that needs to be reduced.
