Pros

Good pay and very good benefits for the average person. Excellent pay for the truly superior party if you can prove it.

Cons

Anti-teamwork bonus and evaluation plans are the norm as those rated best are to get the largest bonuses and compensation increases. The ones rated best are not the team players but those in it to achieve for themselves only. Truly superior results are not recognized if you are part of corporate function while supporting a specific business while the rest of the corporate function supports corporate only.

Pros

CNA is a strong believer in hiring highly skilled employees and providing on-going training. Compensation is fair. Employee benefits are comparable. Excellent 401K plan.

Cons

CNA is a company that does a lot of rework. Numerous management changes have caused upset and chaos while new work plans are implemented. Work plans have proven to cause new problems and it becomes a vicious cycle. In the path of these new management work plans are layoffs. I have been laid off twice and re-hired once during another bout of layoffs. Although the goal is to save money for the company, one would have to rationalize that this is costly and Lowes, stockholders and employees are impacted.

Pros

One of the few commercial insurance companies in Chicago with some pockets of excellent leadership and talent, especially in the P&C claims department. The parent company has consistently supported the organization.

Cons

Overall management and leadership are inconsistent and largely ineffective in delivering a business model that is viewed as first in their "chosen" marketplace. The "chosen" marketplace is likewise inconsistent. IT systems, required to effectively run a large P&C insurance operation are limited and make high performance difficult to deliver and measure. inadequate systems and lackluster management performance result in passing the buck, assigning blame, backstabbing and inconsistent performance reviews that make for an uncomfortable work environment.
