Pros

Telecommuting allows me to do my work when I want to.

Cons

Being a full-time telecommuter might seem enviable to the uninitiated, but there are hidden costs, including: no visibility, no promotion, no raise (but we did get a nice 12% pay cut some years ago), no bonus, no loyalty, no allies, absolutely no training other than the worthless outdated and simplistic CBT junk, no reimbursement for required technical books, no reimbursement for office expenses such as phone, internet or printer supplies, no 360 feedback, no sense of appreciation, no recognition, no upward mobility. They also robbed me of $200 interest I was obliged to pay on my company expense card, due to the cumbersome and broken expense reimbursement system. If you're a project "commodity" worker, you will always be a layoff target when the project ends. There is no bench pay, other than being forced to use your accrued sick or vacation days. This is UNCONSCIONABLE. In sum, if you want to be a CSC commodity worker, be prepared to be nothing more than a voice on the phone and a number in a database. You have no presence, no image, no future. You would get as much personal satisfaction licking envelopes. I'm not bitter about this. It has been my choice to stay with the company, although I have dodged five RIF bullets in 10 years.
